Hey all,
Since we're getting ready to launch for reals now, I figured it's time to start expanding things to a more general community level. Yes, we are all here because of our love of Star Trek and roleplaying/writing, but I also think of you guys as my friends, and some of you are basically family to me now, so this site need not be constrained to just Star Trek.
To that end, I'm starting this, the official music snobbery thread! What are you listening to now? What are your favorite bands/musicians? What's something you like that most people probably haven't heard?
My first contribution here is an album that I've become a little obsessed with over the past month. It's called 'Worry.' by Jeff Rosenstock:
Punk is sort of 'my bag,' as it were, and Rosenstock has proven to be something of a force in the modern DIY punk scene. His music is reminiscent of mid-late 90s Bay-Area pop-punk, kind of like a more credible Blink 182 with actual meaningful substance.
Worry. is a brilliant examination of modern American culture, and it carries a lot of themes of racial injustice, corporate appropriation, and the loneliness that results from our obsession with social media. If you only want to listen to one song, listen to 'To Be A Ghost...' which is a succinct summary of the themes I mentioned. It's also a great illustration of the simple lyrical eloquence that Rosenstock has made his signature:
Born as a data mine for targeted marketing
And no one'll listen up 'til you become a hashtag or a meme
Hate's not a fad that dies with its virality
They want you to be a ghost
When they rob you of your hope
But you have power
When they're not expecting anything
As you might notice, picking out just one song is a bit difficult with this album. The tracks are designed to run together, which gives the album a fantastic sense of pace that culminates in tracks 13-17 being a nonstop, triumphant ride, and in my mind the thing that makes this album 'great' instead of just 'good.'
