Prologue
Six weeks. That was how long it had taken Nyemi to become disillusioned with his 'dream job.' For the first two years of his career, he had hinted, suggested, and outright begged for a transfer to Deep Space Nine. Every story he'd heard about the place had painted it as the true hub of Starfleet adventure, filled with unknown species and galactic intrigue.
Six weeks had been enough to show him the truth: DS9 was boring.
He was forced to accept that he'd deluded himself. All those stories might have been true twenty years earlier, but now DS9 was just another station. All the lights and bustle of the Promenade were just an annoyance. The frontier had left the place behind long ago.
Eventually, Nyemi accepted that disappointment was simply part of growing up in Starfleet. He certainly wasn't going to ask for another transfer, so he'd just settled into his job, and did it to the best of his ability. He worked his way from Docking to Residential Logistics, then Promenade Requisitions, and finally Chief Docking Coordinator, sort of the head logistics nerd for the station.
That was why he was in Ops when the Wormhole bloomed, and a pair of Jem'hadar attack ships spilled into the Alpha Quadrant more than two decades after the last had returned to the Gamma.
"Red Alert," called Captain Morga, her voice steady as ever. Nyemi fully believed he was about to vomit his heart onto the deck.
"Red Alert! Shields up!" shouted Lieutenant Abe.
"Hail the lead ship, Mr. Sette," Morga ordered. It took Nyemi a moment to realize that was his name. He scrambled desperately for the communications controls, pinging the attack ship.
"Uh," he started, panicking as his training abandoned him wholesale.
"Sir, one of the ships is firing-" called Abe, who soon wore an expression of shock. "It's firing on the other one."
The brief battle played out on the viewscreen. The lead ship was venting drive plasma, but still managed to fire back an impressive volley, striking the pursuer's ventral command section after a brilliant feint. The ship erupted in purple-blue fire and a blinding flash.
"One down," whooped Abe, as if he'd been the one to fire the shots.
"Sir, the other ship is going critical," Chief Nuvok calmly informed.
"It's heading this way!" cried Abe.
"Emergency power to shields!" called Morga. "All hands, brace for impact!"
Nyemi clutched his station, closing his eyes as the ship tore apart. The shockwave hit a moment later, rattling the deck but little else. Adrenaline still coursing, Nyemi opened his eyes in time to see a half-dozen transporter beams give way to massive, purple-and-gray-scaled behemoths.
Abe has her phaser in hand and a manic look in his eyes as he aimed it at the boarders, and Nyemi was certain he was about to see him die. Captain Morga had her phaser out as well, but wore a curious expression. The Jem'hadar had slowly raised their hands.
"Explain yourselves," Morga eventually instructed.
One of the Jem'hadar took a careful step forward, and Morga motioned for Abe to keep calm.
"I am First Takoa'lan," rumbled the foreboding brute. "I request asylum."

Mission Orders <IncomingComm> <OrigSFHQ> <Dest86273> <SecLev9>
TO: Captain Jiang Zhihao, Commanding Officer USS Zorya NCC-86273 CC: Lieutenant Commander Joanne Feyna, Executive Officer USS Zorya NCC-86273
FROM: Office of Fleet Admiral Ajani Ket, Alpha CentCom
SUBJECT: Mission Orders SD 11707.20
Captain Jiang,
The Zorya is to proceed immediately to Starbase 112. You are authorized and intstructed to utilize the Zorya's Quantum Slipstream Drive for this mission.
At Starbase 112, your complement of Mustang II fighter craft will be decommissioned and replaced by three wings of Spitfire-class Heavy Superiority Fighters. In addition, you will take on two additional Wing Commanders whose assignments are the rapid training of your current combat pilots in the use of these craft.
Once the fighters and instructors are aboard, you are to proceed directly to Deep Space Nine, where you will receive further orders. You have no more than 4 hours to reach DS9, Captain. This will tax your QSD, but speed will be essential.
Godspeed and good luck, Captain.
Fleet Admiral Ajani Ket

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11707.20 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Time for an upgrade. We'll be stopping at Starbase 112 for an upgrade to our fighter wings. This one is going to feel like a motor sports pit stop, I'm afraid, as we have to make it to Deep Space 9 in just four hours. As a result, we'll be using the Quantum Slipstream Drive.
XO: We're under some pressure to get this done quickly, though I'm not sure why. Please coordinate all the departments to make sure everything goes smoothly. Find out from NAV the time it will take to get from SB112 to DS9 and make sure we leave before this deadline passes, even if it means we leave some of the upgrades behind. This deadline is sure to add stress to the crew, but I have every confidence we can get this done in record time. It does concern me, however, that Starfleet feel it necessary to not only upgrade our fighter wings, but feel the need to train our pilots in accelerated time. Something tells me we might be using them on our next assignment. Let's make sure we're ready for anything. Even if nothing comes of this, I see the four hour deadline as a fine exercise for the crew.
CTO: I am sure you'll want direct involvement with the upgrade, considering their tactical nature. Familiarise yourself with the new Spitfire-class fighters, if you aren't already. I'd like to know what they are capable of. Additionally, when I meet our new Wing Commanders in my ready room, I'd like you there as well.
OPS: We must not miss the deadline. Contact Starbase 112 ahead of our arrival to schedule the upgrades and make sure they can be done in time. I'd like you to coordinate with the other departments regarding inventory and supplies we might want to take on board at SB112. Additionally, please have our two new Wing Commanders report to me as soon as they arrive.
CMO: Doctor, I want you to take this time to prepare Sickbay for anything. With new fighters and a strict deadline, the Zorya may well be entering a combat situation at some point, and I want Sickbay running at peak efficiency the entire time.
CSO: Work with Engineering to monitor the Quantum Slipstream Drive. No doubt pushing it this hard will be a strain, so keep a close eye on it, and report to Commander Feyna the first sign of trouble.
ENG: Ensign Qul'Tuq, I am sure you're excited to use the Quantum Slipstream Drive. Ensure it runs smoothly the entire time, and keep an active link with Lieutenant Goodman on the bridge so we can get direct updates.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11707.31 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
XO: Get us to Deep Space 9.
CTO: Work alongside the Wing Commanders with their accelerated training program.
OPS: Contact DS9 and let them know we're departing SB112 and should be there shortly.
CMO: Keep Sickbay ready. Also, please delay the new wing commander's medicals. Their time is crucial right now.
CSO/ENG: How did the QSD perform? Any unexpected results? Are we confident for it's re-use? And, additionally, is there some way to reduce the cool-down time?

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11709.19 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
XO: I want to talk with you as soon as we get the chance, please.
CTO: We're staying out of any conflict between the Jem'hadar, but we will defend ourselves if necessary. Make sure the wing commanders are ready, and remain at yellow alert for the time being.
CMO: Prepare a report for Starfleet about the Jem'hadar's plans for reproduction.
OPS: I want you to keep monitoring Jem'hadar communications. Inform Commander Feyna of anything out of the ordinary.
CSO: Keep an eye on the LRS, I want to know if any Jem'hadar ships get too close. Additionally, look over the sensor readings from when we encountered that cloaked vessel, see if there's some way we can detect them while cloaked. Their use of cloaking technology must be pretty recent and they may not have quite perfected it yet. A long shot, I know, but we could use any edge we can get.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11709.25 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
XO: I want to talk with you as soon as we get the chance, please.
CTO: Keep us at yellow alert and the fighter wings at the ready.
CMO/OPS/CSO: See if you can find out more about these... Yazran. We may be on a diplomatic mission, but I don't see why we can't do some exploring, of a sort, at the same time. Takoa'lan mentioned the Yazran provide the Jem'Hadar with some "material in exchange for protection and security." Let's see if we can't figure out what that is.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11710.23 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: I knew there was a reason I didn't want to be here in the first place... Alpha Renoa claims the Dominion are planning to destroy the wormhole as soon as we enter scanner range. I can see two choices. Either we stay away from the wormhole, and wait and see what happens, or we continue, see if we can get back through before, if, such a thing is planned. I'm going with the latter option. If any of you have any objections, speak up now.
XO: We can't be seen to take sides, even if Alpha Renoa thinks otherwise. However, if the Dominion prevent our entry into the wormhole, or destroy the wormhole, they're the ones forcing the matter. I consider both actions an act of war. In such a case, we'll be returning to Yazran and joining the defense forces. I want the crew ready, and I'll need your help to get through this.
CSO: When we entered the Gamma Quadrant, we saw Jem'hadar ships cloaking. I know it is a long shot, but analyse those scans and see if there is any way we can detect those ships. I also want long range scanners working as much as possible. I'd like to see the state of the wormhole as soon as possible.
CTO: Stay at yellow alert. I'm not going in guns blazing while we have no evidence the wormhole is at risk. Stay on your toes.
OPS: I want you to get a message through to Starfleet, update them on this situation. If we can't get through, I at least want that message to. Get it done.
CMO: I see Federation History was one of your strong points at the Academy. Do you have any insights on the Dominion, anything that might help us judge their actions in this situation, predict their next move?
