TO: Captain Sara Sumner, Commanding Officer USS Chiron
FROM: Admiral Cerridwyn Rice, Starfleet Command
SUBJECT: Mission Orders 11706.29
Captain Sumner,
Political concerns and fears of conflict have unfortunately been the main focus of most Starfleet missions of late. While the benefits of your next assignment may well help in those areas, it is with some pleasure I can reveal your next mission is one of a scientific nature that harkens back to the core tenets of the federation - exploration.
A team of scientists led by Doctor Onishi have spent many years researching travel methods, specifically using information gathered in relation to what's referred to as "underspace". You may have heard of the Vaadwaur's and Turei's use of such tunnels in the Delta quadrant. Doctor Onishi and her team believe they have reached a point in their research for a practical demonstration to create our own network of underspace. Not only would this bring logistics and travel within the federation to a whole new level of convenience and speed, but the possibilities for exploration far away from the Alpha quadrant are tantalising.
Doctor Onishi and her team will be rendezvousing with the USS Chiron on stardate 11706.29 along with the technology required to prepare the Chiron for the test. She will be able to give you further details regarding this experiment, as well as field your questions. Please give your full co-operation to Doctor Onishi.

SD 11706.29
TO: Senior Staff, USS Chiron NCC-77303 FROM: Captain Sara Sumner, CO USS Chiron NCC-77303
All: Now that we're properly shaken down (and then some), we've been given our first official mission as the crew of the USS Chiron: revolutionize interstellar travel.
Dr. Onishi and her team have been researching a concept, initially discovered in the Delta Quadrant, called 'Underspace.' As I understand it, Underspace consists of artificial tunnels through subspace allowing for faster-than-warp travel between set points in normal space.
Please note that I got a 73 on my subspace mechanics final.
Once we rendezvous with Dr. Onishi, I'm sure she'll be able to answer any questions you might have.
XO: Please see to arrangements for the doctor and her team.
CTO: Please ensure the doctor's team has the proper clearances for the systems they'll be using.
CSO/OPS: The team will be bringing a variety of equipment on board. Please assist in getting it installed and in coordinating the personnel necessary for their demonstration.
I know you all might have other concerns on your mind. We live in uncertain times, to say the least. This mission is in keeping with the core values of Starfleet and the Federation: exploration, and shared prosperity. I encourage each of you to keep this in mind, and to embrace this mission with as much enthusiasm as you can muster.
Some day, this war will be over, and we can be the people we know ourselves to be. This mission will help lay the foundation.
That is all.
Captain Sara Sumner

TO: Senior Staff, USS Chiron NCC-77303 FROM: Captain Sara Sumner, CO USS Chiron NCC-77303
XO: I'm currently on a call with Starfleet Command. I don't know how long it will take, but I'll likely need you to take the lead with Dr. Onishi and her team. Do whatever you need to make the ship ready for conduct her trials.
CSO: Work with Engineering to monitor the ship's systems before and during the trial. If something looks off, shut it down.
CTO: Don't let the nerds break our guns, Marcus.
That is all.

TO: Senior Staff, USS Chiron NCC-77303 FROM: Captain Sara Sumner, CO USS Chiron NCC-77303
XO: Secure Dr. Onishi's team.
CTO: Yellow Alert.
OPS: Hail the lead ship.
CSO: Ensure that Dr. Onishi's modifications won't interfere with our defensive systems in case this goes south.
MED: Be on alert, Doctor. We may be heading for a combat situation.

SD 11707.27
TO: Senior Staff, USS Chiron NCC-77303 FROM: Captain Sara Sumner, CO USS Chiron NCC-77303
All: While our science teams continue to figure out how to exit the underspace tunnel, we're going to switch gears and try to make peaceful contact with the Vaadwuar.
XO: Continue working with Dr. Onishi on reversing whatever the Vaadwuar did to our hull.
CSO: Send an update on the probe telemetry to Mr. Hobart.
CTO: Keep us at Yellow Alert. Under no circumstances are you to fire on the Vaadwuar unless I give the order, even if they fire at us. Further violence must be a last resort.
OPS: Ms. Terrell, your diplomatic expertise is needed. Please put together a basic package of things the Federation might be willing to offer the Vaadwuar in exchange for cessation of hostilities.
MED: Remain alert, Ms. Evans. It may be worth looking into what we might know about Vaadwuar physiology, though I imagine it will either be very limited, highly classified, or both.
Helm: Mr. Hobart, once the impulse engines are back online, prepare to traverse the underspace tunnels. Mr. Hamlet should be providing you the closest thing we have to a map - we're going to work our way in the direction of the Delta Quadrant in search of Vaadwuar ships.

TO: Senior Staff, USS Chiron NCC-77303 FROM: Captain Sara Sumner, CO USS Chiron NCC-77303
ALL: We are at full combat readiness until further notice. For each of us, this was the most terrifying simulation the Academy ever put us through, but they put us through it nonetheless for a day exactly like today. Remember your training, do your job, and keep your head down, and we'll pull through this.
XO: Please see me in my ready room.
aNAV: Set course for Hirogen space, maximum warp. Have the QSD on standby.
aTAC: Ms. Colchester, please execute Borg protocol and distribute the proper weapon modifications to all sections of the ship. Station anti-boarding teams in all sensitive areas.
OPS: I don't know that we have anyone on board who can be considered an 'expert' on the Delta Quadrant, but please look over what info we have and identify any powers who might be friendly. At the moment, we're out here alone. In addition, please prepare to make contact with the Hirogen.
CSO: Work with Dr. Onishi on a way to recreate whatever process the Vaadwuar used to alter our hull. Our best chance at getting home in one piece is to use the underspace tunnels.
MED: Once Mr. Trevanion is stable, I need Sickbay working on any method you can devise to counter or hinder Borg nanoprobes. I know the likelihood of such a thing is slim, but try anyway. In addition, prepare for casualties in case we can't shake the Sphere.
