Penny barely even noticed Tony, or noticed any weirdness until the sim today anyway, lol. Oh, Tony is plenty weird, once you start looking. This was a great log, folks. It's so good to see crewmembers discussing the finer points of this whole situation.

Stardate 11804.26
Penny leaned back against the turbolift wall and looked idly down at the padd in her hand displaying information about the stolen medicine and the colonists on Zeta Nine. Her mind wasn’t focused on it though, instead she was mentally replaying what had happened on the bridge. Struggling to piece together what was wrong. Commander Aldalberto’s odd behavior, winking as if he was joking while they discussed the current situation; and the way Captain Sumner looked at them when she got done talking to the Admiral. She sighed and lowered the padd, running her free hand through her short hair in frustration. It always seemed like she was saying or doing something wrong. She wasn’t even sure what it was this time, but she felt like it had somehow upset the Captain.
As the lift came to a stop and the door opened, she nodded politely to the officer entering and headed down the corridor toward sickbay. With each person she passed, she became more aware of how little she felt like she could relate to anyone. By the time she reached her destination she was feeling very defeated.
The doors to the sickbay slid open with a muffled swish and Penny entered. She only got a few steps in when she thought she heard an unfamiliar voice. Glancing around she saw a woman with red hair, wearing a science uniform standing near Dr. Rand, seemingly engrossed in a conversation.
Penny eyed them quizzically for a moment and then moved on to the far side of the room, near her office. Madeleine was cataloguing some supplies that they had picked up while at Starbase 375 and she smiled warmly as the doctor approached her.
“Madeleine, what is Ensign Janek down here for?”
“She’s visiting Dr. Rand,” Madeleine looked back down at her list, “they’ve been seeing each other for a couple months or so.”
“Oh really? That’s interesting…”
The redhead had departed without Penny hearing her leave and Declan interrupted their conversation, having heard the doctor’s last statement. “What’s interesting?”
“I wouldn’t have expected you and Silvie Janek, that’s all.”
“Don’t I seem like the kind of guy to go for a redhead?”
“No, I mean… she’s really quite intelligent and accomplished. I’ve read some of the research she did before graduating from the Academy and it’s promising stuff. She’s got a bright career ahead of her.”
Declan gave her an offended look mingled with a good measure of confusion, “You mean you don’t think I’d be interested in a smart woman?”
Penny shook her head in frustration, this wasn’t going the way she intended, “Let me start over. Well done Declan, she’s a keeper!”
Madeleine stifled a laugh and Dr. Rand looked at her for a moment before rolling his eyes, “Whatever Evans, my duty shift is over so I’m heading out. I think one of the new people is coming on in a few minutes though. My reports are on the desk.”
He didn’t wait for her to answer, so Penny was left saying, “Ok, thanks,” to his back as he exited the sickbay.
“Is he mad at me?”
Madeleine shrugged, “He’ll get over it. Heck he’ll probably forget all about it after spending some more time with Silvie.”
“I didn’t mean to be insulting...”
The nurse offered a reassuring smile to her and changed the subject, “So how did it go on the bridge today?”
The CMO’s lips tightened into a forced smile, and Madeleine raised an eyebrow, “That good huh?”
Penny just shook her head, “It was fine.”
“Then you wouldn’t mind answering a question for me?”
“Hmm, what’s that?” She asked with some trepidation, she wasn’t sure she really wanted to know. Madeleine was warm and friendly, but she was an incorrigible gossip.
She leaned in with a sparkle in her eye and whispered conspiratorially, “Is Commander Aldalberto really as good looking as I’ve heard?”
“What?! I don’t know, I didn’t really think about it…” she considered it for a moment and then shrugged, “I suppose he is good looking, but he…,” with a shake of her head she finished resolutely, “It doesn’t matter, this is hardly appropriate.”
Madeleine chuckled heartily at the Doctor’s discomfort at being asked such a question. As she returned to her busy work, she casually brought up a new topic, “While we’re talking about the bridge there's something I’ve been wanting to discuss with you. Now that we are fully staffed down here, I think you should consider putting in more time on the bridge.”
Penny felt her stomach knot up a bit, “What would I do up there? My job is down here.”
“The same thing you do here, reports and research! Besides, in emergencies or when needed you would still work down here.”
“I don't know Madeleine…”
“Dr. Evans, you’re the Chief Medical Officer now, you need to stop thinking like an assistant! Most CMOs spend some of their time on the bridge. I think you should consider it.” Her face took on an almost motherly look as she said, "I believe they knew what they were doing when you were promoted to CMO, you just have to believe it yourself," she left it unsaid that she was trying to help support Dr. Evans in whatever way she could.
“I’ll think about it,” Penny replied, all the time wishing she didn't know that her nurse was right. She was hiding down here, and after today she wanted nothing more than to continue hiding. But her new staff members were all capable and very confident. If she wanted to be worthy of the position as head of this department then she was going to have to step outside her comfort zone a little more. Why, oh why did they have to promote her?

Stardate 11806.11
Penny rolled over and pushed herself up to a sitting position, catching her breath. Reaching up to her face she gingerly felt the abrasion along her left jawline from where her face met the floor. She drew a sharp breath at the sting, but despite the pain she could tell it wasn’t serious. Her medical tricorder sat a few feet away and she stretched out to grab it off the floor. Turning back to her patient she flipped it open and leaned down. Her head wound was bleeding pretty badly, but that wasn’t all that unusual. She gently brushed Danann’s red curls back from her face so Penny could see the wound better. The tricorder beeped, an incongruently cheerful sound in the middle of this situation. She looked down to see the extent of the internal damage.
Concussion, skull fracture, mild brain swelling. It wasn’t the worst possible diagnosis, but it wasn’t great either. Penny hung her head for a moment and then pulled the medikit over to her by the strap. She dug out a hypospray and an assortment of vials. She checked the labels and dropped them back into the case one by one until she found the ones she was looking for. Disposing of the rest back into the case, she loaded the hypo with 2ccs of Inpedrezine and set two other vials aside. The brain swelling worried her the most at the moment, so hopefully the Inpedrezine would counteract it. She pressed the hypo to Danann’s neck and it administered the medicine with a soft hiss.
The wound itself was still bleeding, that was her second concern. Head wounds were notorious for excessive bleeding, but the combination of blood loss and brain swelling worried her that Danann’s blood pressure might drop or worse, that she’ll suffer from oxygen deprivation. Retrieving a dermal regenerator, she initialized it and trained the beam onto the head wound, passing it back and forth over it until the laceration was closed. It felt like forever but it really took less than a minute.
She grabbed the two vials from the floor and loaded a concoction of Cordrazine and Hydrocortilene. It’s intended effect being to both wake Danann up and alleviate any pain she would have upon waking. Penny knew it was a risk waking her up, she could cause more damage with too much movement, but the greater risk was her being unconscious with a head trauma. Once again applying the hypo to her patient’s neck, the medicine was administered and she straightened up, pushing a lock of her short hair off her forehead and behind her ear. While she waited for Danann to respond to the stimulant Penny finally took a quick glance around her. She had been so focused on dealing with Danann the last few minutes that everything else had faded into the background. She could see this wasn’t her only patient, but she didn’t have time to think about that as she heard Danann begin to stir.

Joint Log with Captain Sara Sumner
Stardate 11806.13
Penny stood next to Captain Sumner’s biobed, staring thoughtfully at her vitals. They had been steadily improving for the last forty minutes. The lung had inflated again once she had closed up, like she had hoped. It could have been so much worse, she tried not to think about it. Now she was just waiting for the sedative to wear off, checking in between treating other patients.
“How’s she doing Evans?” Declan inquired as he came up beside her.
“She’s good, how are things on the bridge?” He hadn’t had a chance to report in to her since she beamed off the bridge.
“It’s fine, we couldn’t see to everyone though. There are a few that I’ve instructed to come see us in sickbay as soon as they can.”
The all too familiar annoyed tone in his voice told her he had probably butted heads with at least one person on the bridge. Hardly surprising to her, but she didn’t comment. He eyed her curiously, between the abrasion on her face and a streak of Danann’s blood smear on her forehead she looked as if she’d seen better days. “No offense, but you look like hell. Want me to fix that?” She didn’t have a chance to respond to him before a med tech called for help from across the sickbay, followed by the alarms from a coding patient.
“I’m fine, go,” she said with a jerk of her head toward the ruckus. He nodded and hurried away to help, leaving her at the Captain’s biobed.
Sara’s eyes fluttered briefly before her brow furrowed. Consciousness came with a fair amount of discomfort, and it took her a moment to actually open her eyes. She glanced Evans’ way before concentrating on the ceiling, small grimaces tweaking her features with each breath.
“m’I good?” she mumbled, finally looking at her Chief Medical Officer.
Stepping up next to the biobed, Penny nodded, “I can finally say yes you are ok,” she tried to joke a bit, despite not feeling particularly lighthearted at the moment. “You need to rest, though.”
Sara didn’t respond immediately, her eyes back to searching the ceiling. Each breath brought a little more confidence that her chest wouldn’t crumble, which helped. She also wasn’t feeling particularly lighthearted.
“How long was I under?” she asked.
“A little over an hour in total. Are you having trouble breathing?” She was looking again at the vitals, noting the oxygen levels were slightly low, but nothing that would normally worry her.
“Feels a little raw,” Sara observed. “Should be okay, though, just kinda like I have a cold or something.”
She took a few shaky breaths as if to test the theory before look Penny’s way.
“Do, uh, do we have a preliminary casualty report?” she asked.
“I don’t have a firm list yet, but we have quite a few missing from the decks that were breached and we’ve lost a handful here in sickbay, I’ll get you some solid numbers as soon as I can though.”
Sara brought her hands up to cover her face, giving an aggrieved sigh. She held them there for a long moment, her breath even-but-quivering along with the occasional sniff. Finally she wiped her eyes on her sleeve, trying to keep her expression steady despite the pit in her chest, probably around where her heart was, which was actually fairly close to where the pain in her lung was as well. Refusing to have them mended had indeed been ill-advised.
“I’m sorry to add to your workload, Penny,” she managed, doing her absolute best to keep her tone even. Her voice only cracked twice.
Penny felt a mix of conflicting emotions, it was an unexpectedly vulnerable moment to witness from a woman for whom she had grown to feel a great deal of respect. She felt a surge of compassion, the nurturer in her wanted to comfort Sara, but in a battle with her fears nearly everything always lost and this time was no different. She felt inadequate to the task and so uncertain of what to say that she just responded lamely, “It’s fine, really. That’s what I’m here for.”
She cleared her throat and changed the subject, “We let your husband know the surgery went well and promised we’d let him know once you were awake, your family was glad for the good news.”
After a few steadying breaths, Sara slowly pushed herself to a seated position, wincing a bit as her ribs shifted. She vividly recalled the moment when the torpedo hit, the violent tumbling that had sent so many sprawling, that had killed Anne Colchester and so many others belowdecks. She couldn’t help but think about how frightened Thalev and Ulani must have been.
“Thank you, Doctor Evans,” she whispered, before clearing her throat. “I, uh… If I’m free to go, I think I’ll return to my quarters, and take your advice to rest.”
Penny smiled softly and nodded, “You’re welcome Captain, and try to take it easy on those ribs, they’re still freshly mended.”
She started to walk away and then stopped and turned back around, “Also, there’s someone I think you might like to see over there,” she glanced in the direction of the biobed Niamh could be seen laying on, “She seemed concerned about how you were doing too.” Then the doctor turned and left to attend to other things.
Sara looked to the semi-distant biobed, took a deep breath, and instantly regretted it.

Penny rubbed her tired eyes and blinked hard to bring the words on the padd into focus. The text seemed to waver a bit as she struggled to keep her drooping eyelids open.
“Here, have this.” A cup of coffee came into view to her left side and she glanced over to see Madeleine was the one bearing this most welcome gift.
“Thanks,” Penny commented before taking a long drink of the steaming coffee.
“Declan should be back in half an hour, you should get a break for a few hours when he gets in. I've been sending people on five hour breaks in a rotation so most of our people are still here, but I think things are getting to a point where we can go back to regular shifts by this evening.”
She gave a grateful nod to her head nurse for handling the schedule and handed the padd to Madeleine, “I think we can send Lieutenant Addison over to recovery.”
Madeleine noted it on the file and motioned in the direction of where Danann was still laying, “She’s been asking when she can leave for a better part of two days now.”
“How’s the swelling?”
“It’s down completely, her vitals are good. We’ve had her on the Poly-nutrient Solution and it’s helped replenish her.”
“Alright, we can let her go. You may want to check with security to see how they want to handle her discharge. I’m not really sure of the particulars of what is going to happen to her from here.”
Penny looked thoughtfully at Danann when a Medical Officer hurried over to her right, “Dr. Evans!”
“Hmm?” she asked as she turned her attention to the young woman, an unjoined trill who had come onboard with the new recruits, “What is it Kalis?”
“We’ve, um, we’re missing a patient…”
Suddenly Penny felt very awake, “We’re what?”
“I’m sorry ma’am, she was there and we were taking care of her and when I got back she was missing.”
Penny rubbed her forehead. Just when she had thought that they were finally getting things under control things went sideways again. First she let the Captain defer treatment, then she had left Danann to run around with a severe head injury for far too long, now they misplaced a patient. “Who is it?”
“Mahassiné.”
“Contact Security, let them know what’s going on. Hopefully they can find her and bring her back in,” Madeleine nodded and headed off to do as Penny requested. Meanwhile Kalis stood, wringing her hands nervously, awaiting the reprimand she believed was surely coming.
“Cadet Kalis, I’m sure once Mahassiné returns, she will need some attention. Why don’t you prepare for that?” She offered an encouraging smile and relief broke across Kalis’ face before she trotted off to prepare.
Penny cast a glance at the empty bed that Mahassiné had previously occupied and bit her lower lip anxiously. She turned and made her way into the office and just as she did Madeleine followed her in the room. “Doctor, I just got hold of Security. They already have her and will be bringing her back.”
“Thank you.”
Madeleine tipped her head, studying her boss with concern. She expected her to be more relieved at the news. Instead she sat at her desk with very little expression beyond fatigue. Penny looked up at Madeleine, “Is that all?”
The nurse gave a worried nod and left the room, she got the hint. Penny watched her leave and then rested her head in her hands. Right now she just felt tired and unable get it together. She had hoped that the longer she was CMO, the more she would get the hang of it. Instead she felt like it was just a string of near misses and absolute failures.

Penny made her way along the corridor, padd in hand. Her eyes nervously scanned the numbers on the doors as she passed. She finally stopped in front of the appropriate door, fiddling with the padd and staring at the numbers. For a moment she turned, as if to leave but she stopped again, muttering to herself, “Come on Penny…” and she reached out to ring the bell at Hamlet’s quarters.
Hamlet was laying down on the sofa, dozing off whilst Mr Gallop snored away at his feet, when the door chimed. "Come in." The old Klingon yawned incoherently, realising it when the door didn't open immediately. He rubbed his eyes, and stood up slowly shuffling over to the door. "Oh..."He blinked, surprised by who he opened it to, before smiling. "Hello, Doctor... How can I help you?" He asked curiously "I dinni miss a physical did I?"
With an embarrassed grin she shook her head, “Oh, no! I just have something I’d like to run by you. It’s … it’s just an idea now, but I’d like a sounding board and I thought you might be a good person to talk to about it.” She shifted awkwardly, feeling terribly self conscious and wishing she hadn’t done this. "Sure." He replied cheerfully. "C'mon in." He stepped back from the open door, gesturing for her to enter. "Can I get you anything? Cup of tea, Raktajino..." He plodded over to the replicator, needing a cup of tea himself, even if she didn’t. "Take a seat."
Mr Gallop's ear pivoted around at the sound of a guest, before he craned his neck to peer over at who it was, his tail wagging excitedly.
“I’m fine, thank you.” Truthfully, she had drank way too much coffee already that day. If she drank anymore she might be up for the next 48 hours straight. She smiled at Mr Gallop, finding him somehow reassuring. “Are you leaving to see your family soon? I mean, I’m not interrupting you getting ready or anything like that, right?”
"More for me then." Hamlet replicated a tea for himself, sipping at it cheerfully, as he made his way back to the sofa. "Ach, I wasn't doing anything important... boredom napping mainly."
"'Nother week until I leave for Earth, and to be honest, I just have to bring me and the targ. I mean, we're goin' home... most of m'stuff's already there." He shrugged, sitting back in his previous spot. "So... how can I help? Not often a doctor asks for my opinion on something... and I'm married to one." He chuckled.
“Well, I was doing some research shortly after we arrived in the delta quadrant,” she paced a few steps in front of the couch. She had already switched into work mode, forgetting to give him the padd, instead tapping it and motioning with it as she paced and spoke. “I came across some early research into the potential uses for DNA as information storage. As far back as 2017, they were encoding images into DNA, and then I came across some research they did into coding computer viruses into it as well. Most research into DNA manipulation was abandoned, “ she she waved the hand with the padd in it and gave a small shrug, “which we all know about. I think this particular avenue of research was abandoned earlier, probably fear for the applications that could arise from it.”
She resumed her pacing with another small dismissive wave of her hand to indicate it wasn’t really the point, “Regardless, it got me thinking. Obviously the threat was a little more immediate at the moment, but I still think it could be useful, don’t you?” Penny stopped pacing to look at him nervously as she concluded.
Hamlet listened and nodded, finding what she was saying interesting, but he couldn't help but notice the padd she seemed to almost give him. He stared at it for a long moment, before realising she had finished talking, and was holding her up with his response. "Umm..."
He raised a finger, still postulating in his head, finally coming to an answer. "I think genetic research is important. Genomic modifications are still made on medical grounds, in the direst of circumstances, and we still need genetic technology to study natural viruses." He smiled, before continuing. "And my people utilised DNA data storage, back in the old days, before uhhh..." Even though he didn't much care for the empire, there were some things Klingons still didn't talk about with outsiders.
".....Anyway, what did you have in mind?" He simply settled on asking.
She stood still a moment, looking at him in surprise, “I’m so sorry, I didn’t…” she held the padd out to him, “These are the particular areas of relevant research. What I had in mind was defensive applications against the Borg.”
She sat down on the couch as she went on, “When the Borg inject nanoprobes into the body of the person being assimilated, they latch onto blood cells and travel through the body to the important organs. Once there, they begin to take over the essential functions. What if we encoded some DNA with a computer virus, much like that research. When the nanoprobes sequence the DNA, it executes the virus in the nanoprobe. I mean, best case scenario we could encode it to transmit to the nearest nanoprobe and then shut down. If successful we could basically have an inoculation against assimilation. What do you think?"
She looked at him nervously, hoping there wasn't some glaring flaw she had overlooked.
"Hmmm...." The old Klingon sat back and wondered. "It sounds, very much like a good idea to me." He looked over her research notes. "The only problem off the top of my head is the virus itself. Even borg nanoprobes have anti-viral systems to withstand tampering."
"But that's what research and experimentation are for." He smiled at her.
“Well the coding is well beyond my skills, I’m a doctor. If someone else can write it though, I can sequence it into DNA. I anticipate a few other bumps biologically speaking, but I have some thoughts on those. Clearly this will take more than just me working on it though.”
"Of course, but this is a promising idea." He sipped his tea, clearing his eyes some more. "Have you tried contacting anyone at the Daystrom institute about this? They have a bunch of people I reckon would love to look into it; the idea of defeating the Borg in someway, would have people lining up for you."
Penny blinked in surprise at this, and her cheeks flushed a bit, “No, I wasn’t even sure this was worth pursuing. You are actually the first person I’ve talked to about it. I’m actually a little concerned there might be pushback because it’s research involving DNA manipulation. I mean, it’s not like augments or anything, but it’s one of those fidgety areas of research that they seem to be cautious about entering.”
"Ach, ya got nout to worry about lass. As you say, there's more to genetics than augmentation." He chuckled. "And I feel honoured that you've brought this to me before anyone else.
"And, don't sell yerself so short doctor." He waved the padd. "This could lead places."
Her cheeks turned a slightly deeper shade of red at his encouragement. “I really hope so, it could be a big step forward in defending ourselves a bit better from the Borg if it works out.” She stood up again, “I shouldn’t keep you, but I hope you might be willing to work with me on this? I can use a scientific mind to see things outside of a medical perspective.”
"Absolutely, Doctor." He placed his cup on the table, and stood up to see her out. "Don't hesitate to stop by anytime." He smiled, moving towards the door with her. "Actually, when you see me next, I'll have my kids in tow. So... that'll be a treat for ya..." He laughed. "Don't be offended if my lads try to put the moves on ya... they've tried with Rebecca, and Doctor Sarissa that you met at the party..."
Penny cringed at the thought of being in such an awkward position, but tried not to show her discomfort at the idea, “I’ll keep that in mind. I do look forward to meeting your family.” It was true, she found Hamlet easy to be around. She couldn’t say the same for everyone, but he was one that set her a little more at ease. It made her curious to see what the rest of his family was like. The doors opened and she smiled as she stepped out, “Thank you, for your feedback and help.”
"Like I said... anytime. I had the same policy when I taught at the academy; my door's always open. It's how I ended up with Mr Douglas." He gave a final smiling chuckling away to himself, giving her a wave goodbye. "And you have a good bit of shoreleave, Doctor. As yer former first officer, that's an order." He nodded letting her get on her way.
