INCOMING AUDIO TRANSMISSION
FROM: Vice-Admiral Brendolyn Ó hÉalaighthe, Starfleet Command
TO: Commander Tom Marsland, C/O USS Zorya
CC: Lt. Commander Joanne Feyna, XO USS Zorya
“Hello Commander. I hope you are ready to get back to it as we have new orders for you.”
“Over the past two weeks a number of Talarian warships have been found destroyed along their border with the Federation and they are blaming us. In all cases there have been no survivors and no distress signals. Naturally we are denying all knowledge but the Talarians are adamant that Starfleet vessels are the only viable threat along their border that could attack and destroy one of their warships so thoroughly without them being able to get word out.”
“Yesterday a Talarian Warship crossed over into Federation Space and entered orbit around Felix II, the newest Human colony in that Sector. The colonists detected that the warship locked weapons on the surface before retreating back into Talarian Space. It’s fortunate that they don’t appear ready to start a shooting war over this but as you can imagine the Diplomatic Corps are in a frenzy, and frankly the colonies in the area are hopping mad. The last thing we need right now is a return to the border raids and skirmishes from fifty years ago.”
"There are a number of Starfleet vessels that patrol the region, but we just don't have the resources to spare to keep it secure. Talarian ships are no match for ours but what they lack in power the make up for in numbers and strategy. Talarians are smart warriors and able ship handlers and they've always had a knack for knowing how to get to where we're most vulnerable when they're so inclined. Back during the Galen Border Wars they'd warp in, raid one of our colonies and warp out before our forces could properly react."
“The Zorya is required to make best speed for Outpost 96 in the Galen System.
I'm hoping the presence of a ship with a bit more punch will be enough to make the Talarians think twice while we come up with a diplomatic solution, and she's fast enough to get to more trouble spots than anything else we have out there."
"You’ll receive specific instructions from Commodore Eric Truman, CO of Starfleet’s task force responsible for patrolling the Talarian border.”
“Tom, I have to tell you that the Commodore wasn’t best pleased when I told him we were sending you. The Zorya doesn’t have the best name in the fleet right now, but my biggest worry is that the Talarians could be getting hit by more of these Starfleet copies that you encountered at Zeta Nine. This could all be part of a larger plot to destabilise the Federation more than it already is. Since you and your crew have a sense of what you’re potentially up against that means you’re the ones that get the gig.”
“I’ll remind you that the incident at Zeta Nine has been classified as Top Secret and neither you or your crew are to discuss it with anyone. Lieutenant Inala and Ensign Volkova in particular must not divulge what they experienced during your rescue mission with anyone, including the rest of the crew.”
"Additionally, remember that this is a highly delicate situation. However, at this point the Talarians may attempt to provoke a greater conflict. To that end I am giving you direct orders not to fire on any Talarian ships unless they are posing a direct threat to Federation lives."
“Good luck Captain. Ó hÉalaighthe out.”
