Greetings Operative.
This data packet has been encoded to your sub-dermal communicator. The following message can only be received by you and others in the Section who are deemed Need to Know.
This is the USS Fermi. Commanded by Captain Noah Thorn
For the last six months the Firmi has been working with a highly experimental Quantum Subspace Tunnelling Device developed by Dr. T'Lon Schubert of the Daystrom Institute. Dr. Schubert's endeavour is to try to create an artificially created Wormhole that can maintain a stable entrance and exit.
For this purpose the Firmi's sensor pod has been removed and refitted with the QSTD, or more colloquially known as "The Cannon". The QTSD is designed to send a high powered energy beam which first punches through into subspace and then somehow acts as a sort of tractor beam to literally bend spacetime in such a way that a corresponding singularity can be created in another point of space. While Dr. Schubert's methodology appears sound in lab conditions, it is unclear how it functions in reality. Particularly as The Cannon seemingly operates with only a relatively limited power drain on the ship. At the point of full power, warp energy is channelled directly to the device and the ship has to operate on reserve batteries, however once it is fired warp power is restored.
Section Control's concern is that this device may prove to be a security risk to the Quadrant. At best, if Doctor Schubert is successful we may have a new stable Wormhole which Starfleet will no doubt wish to explore beyond in its typical naivety. We are still counting the cost of when this occurred the last time. At worst, it is indicated that the device may have the power to be a devastating weapon. The Section missed the opportunity to keep a closer control over the Genesis Device a hundred years ago. We do not intend to slip up again on something that has the capability to be even more powerful. Our best projections indicate that the Cannon has the capability to destroy a planet if used in such a manner.
Though the Section's resources are thin due to Starfleet's witch hunt of us, we have arranged for a team to be assigned to the Fermi. Most notably, the ship's XO has recently contracted an illness which has forced her off ship for an indefinite period. Our still loyal contacts in Starfleet have arranged for this position to be filled by one of us. Our XO can then ensure that the rest of the team can infiltrate the ship with their chosen aliases.
The team's mission is as follows.
1. Obtain what information you can on the device. If the opportunity presents itself you may attempt to take the ship as ours and take it to a Section friendly world. Kidnapping Dr. Schubert may be a possible alternative.
2. Should the device prove to function as intended, attempt to sabotage the results of the mission so as to cause Starfleet to abandon its use. Destruction of the ship is to be considered a viable last resort.
3. Do not allow your capture. Starfleet has taken steps to uncover our entire Section and root it out. The usual precautions must be taken to ensure that any member of the team can reveal sensitive information now that hostilities have begun.
To our knowledge Starfleet is still unable to detect our technology.
As standard you will be provided with the following.
Sub-Dermal Communicator - Transmissions will not be detectable within the ship. Use these to contact members of the team when needed.
Dataport - This non-invasive variant of the dataport will allow you direct neural access to the Fermi's computer. We are hopeful that this will allow you to access portions of the computer you may otherwise not have access to.
Micro-Phaser - The Micro-Phaser will be imbedded into the palm of your hand. Remember that this is limited to one shot and will severely burn your hand when used. Use this only as a last resort.
Your team leader will ensure these items are delivered to your typical dead drops.
Good luck Operative.
