Career Summary
Born in San Diego, Earth, along with his sister, Alyx, Tom matured a little too quick for his own good, due to the area they lived in with their mother, Kathryn, who at the time was assigned to a Hospital there. Always wanting to follow his father's footsteps, Tom set out to join Starfleet. At an early age he had dreams of reaching the stars. Due to his ambition and hard work, he was accepted out of High School to Starfleet Academy. While in his first year at the Academy, he learned of his father's death at Wolf 359, and it was a tragedy for him and his family. He strove to be the best of the best, so he could get to the fleet and show everybody what a difference he could make.
The death of their father also drove Tom's sister, Alyx, to join the Academy, specializing in the Science field, while Tom specialized in Flight Control, always taking after his father. While in training, his mother got reassigned to the USS Thunderchild, a new Akira-class vessel in need of a Chief Medical Officer. Though he had a hard time saying goodbye, if not for this he and his sister would not be so close. They became so close that an almost unbreakable link was formed between them, and they can tell how the other is doing at almost any time.
Tom graduated Starfleet Academy 10th in his class, after taking an additional year of training in Warp Dynamics. He was assigned to the USS Triton, a Nebula-class vessel, as FCO. He had a hard time there without his sister, who had graduated with him and was assigned to the USS Bellerophon, a new Intrepid-class vessel, as it's Science Officer. Just a few months into his posting though, he felt something wrong with her, and immediately took a Leave of Absence to investigate. On his search for his sister, who was lost on an Away Team and presumed dead, he found her shuttle had been attacked by Orion pirates. It was disabled and she was left for dead, after being brutally assaulted.
He personally took her back to Earth with him, and stayed with her until she fully healed. Because of his dedication their bond grew even stronger. Almost a year later, Alyx returned to with Tom to his assignment as Tactical Officer on the USS Apache, a New Orleans class vessel.
It was here that he finally felt he fit in, among this crew. While there as a Tactical Officer, and later as a Flight Control Officer, he felt at home with this crew, from his Commanding Officer all the way down to the people working under him. In one of his first missions on the Apache, he was involved in an incident that made him fire on and kill another Starfleet officer, even though she had shot and killed the Engineering Officer and a Vulcan Negotiator. Before the negotiator, Sotovik, died he had initiated a mindmeld with Tom, which when violently broken by the phaser blast gave him moderate telepathic and empathic powers, which he has to this day.
Because of the violence of the incident, and the opening at Flight, he transferred to FCO. During his stay here he was promoted to Lt.JG, and even found himself in a relationship. They spent many good times together, until his decision to be transferred back to Starfleet Academy for additional training in the Operations Department. Though not too happy with his decision to leave the Apache, he knew he needed to focus more on his job than he had, and thought this to be a good way to do so.
Upon graduating from his program, he was assigned to a Work Crew as the Junior OPS Officer at Starbase 366. He worked in this position as hard as he could, and 3 months later found himself the OPS Officer in charge of the Work Crew. During this time he kept track of the Apache and her whereabouts. In his studies one day he learned the Apache had gone missing, and was found by the USS Pioneer. It was heavily damaged and Starfleet decided to send a work crew out to assist with repairs. By a stroke of luck, his crew was chosen. Upon arrival on the Apache, he thought things would be best if he just kept to himself and got his work done, even though he was hoping for an opportunity to get assigned back to the ship. He worked as hard as he could to stand out, and as luck would have it, he stood out enough to be noticed.
The XO of the Pioneer, Cmdr. Hadley, noticed him and his hard work, and reccommended him for reassignment at OPS to the Apache. When confronted about the transfer, he readily agreed, and was reassigned to the Apache yet once more.
Not too long after he was reassigned there he was forced to take a leave of absence to see his mother, who was on Earth and very sickly. He stood by her bed day and night along with his sister until she recovered. She has since retired from Starfleet as a Captain, and is planning on enjoying her remaining years back on Earth.
During his time on Apache he slowly rose through the ranks, transferring to serve as the USS Huron’s Executive Officer. Following the loss of her Captain, who was a close friend of Tom’s, he opted for shore duty, serving in numerous roles at various starbases.
Finally, the time came for him to return to a starship and he served as the Navigation Officer on the USS Sentinel. His sister, now Lieutenant Marsland, took ill, and he took a leave of absence to Sigma Rho Station to care for her. He was involved in piloting for the evacuation of the station during the 2nd Tzenkethi War and that’s where his sister passed on. The sole surviving member of his family, he re-dedicated himself to his work, and served as Sigma Rho’s Executive Officer, before transferring to attend the Starfleet Starship Command Course.
Personal Information (OOC Perspective a la 20 Questions)
1. Where was your character born?
San Diego, Earth, Sol System.
2. What’s their family situation?
Tom’s mother is retired Starfleet, from the SF Medical Corps. She is living on Earth in San Francisco. Tom’s sister, Alyx, died of an illness that kept her confined to an intensive care unit on Sigma Rho Station, and of injuries sustained during the evacuation of the station during the 2nd Tzenkethi War. Tom has no other family. He is divorced once.
3. What was their childhood like?
Tom’s childhood was one of a military brat. Both of his parents were in Starfleet, although much of his formative years he was able to spend on Earth, at his parent’s request. Tom grew up wanting to fly ships from an early age. What cooler thing to do than to be a pilot of a real starship, after all!
4. Why did your character join the Academy?
See previous answer. Tom likes flying!
5. What was their biggest achievement at the Academy, academic or otherwise?
Tom’s biggest achievement was graduating 10th in his class – or graduating at all, perhaps. He showed up as a cocky flyboy, and in most cases, was able to prove his worth, but was counseled and reprimanded more than once for show-boating in his flight classes and bragging about how great of a pilot he was.
6. What was their biggest setback at the Academy, academic or otherwise?
Tom’s biggest regret, as it were, was that he didn’t make many friends. He ostracized a lot of people, with one notable exception, Niamh Danann. But the ones he did ostracize had no trouble outing his skirting of regulations to the professors every chance they got.
7. What’s your character’s biggest career goal?
Initially, it was to become the best pilot around, fly the coolest ships, like a Defiant-class! Now, it’s to become a successful Starfleet Captain and be on the front lines of bringing Section 31 to justice, opening the Federation administration to more transparency, and rebuilding the Federation. He wants to see the Federation restored and his friends return.
8. What’s your character’s biggest life goal?
To be a great father. To be a great husband. Tom still spends a majority of his time on shore leave at the local establishments with ladies and drinks, but that’s to fill a void left by his lack of real companionship. He wants to find a balance between Starfleet and having a family, and acknowledges that may be impossible.
9. What’s your character’s greatest career accomplishment so far?
Serving as Executive Officer on the USS Huron – he feels like he really brought departments together, fostered good collaboration, and made a successful crew even more so.
10. What’s your character’s biggest career drawback?
Allowing his relationship with his first wife to taint his job choices, especially when the relationship soured. He didn’t make the best choices on career moves that would foster his career, and allowed her attitude to bring out the cavalier attitude he had at the Academy again. This resulted in numerous reprimands and delayed promotions due to his attitude.
11. What’s your character’s biggest achievement in life?
While he won’t admit it, deep down he acknowledges his biggest achievement was his assistance in the evacuation of Sigma Rho Station. His sister died in his runabout during the evacuation, but he saved numerous lives that otherwise wouldn’t have made it.
12. What’s your character’s biggest setback in life?
Tom blames himself severely still for the loss of his sister, Alyx. He also blames himself, but to a much lesser extent, for the failure of his first marriage.
13. Is your character satisfied with their life at this point?
Absolutely yes and absolutely no. Tom is satisfied with the way his career is going, and has matured a lot over his years. He acknowledges his slow promotions, but is looking forward to his next assignment. He is not satisfied with his personal life, and is seen either getting completely hammered outside of work, or not taking personal time at all, instead focusing on the successful part of his life, his career.
14. Who did your character learn the most from in life?
Eric Woo, Commanding Officer, USS Huron. He taught Tom a lot about command, about thinking and listening, about the value of letting a room fall silent. He valued his friendship a lot, and he was a great mentor to Tom.
15. What stands out most about your character to others?
His brashness. He isn’t afraid to call a spade a spade, and resorts to military protocol to ensure that people working for him and his superiors understand him. He likes direct communication, which many can find confrontational. The other thing that would stand out to most is the strict line he has between on and off-duty. Conversations with him are very different in a bar with a Saurian Brandy in hand, much more cordial and relaxed.
16. How does your character react to stressful situations?
He has grown up deciding an action and doing, then later figuring out if it was the right one, oftentimes too late. His Captain from the Huron taught Tom a lot, and helped him temper that into thinking before acting. He responds well to pressure and making decisions when stressed.
17. Does your character have any close friends?
Two. One is an Astrometrics Officer stationed on the Odyssey Station and USS Tempest, Ensign Ariana Taylor. She worked with Tom on the USS Sentinel when he was the Navigator.
The second is a long-term friend, Niamh Danann, who he attended the Academy with. She has left Starfleet to since join the Maquis – a move he disagrees with, but understands as well.
18. Is your character romantically involved with anyone?
Not at this time. But he has hopes of starting a family one day soon.
19. What does your character think about Section 31?
My character hates them. Hates backdoor involvement, and believes every Admiral and Starfleet Captain that followed Section 31 should be tried and brought to justice. My character espouses a citizen-run government, the way the Federation was meant to be and was founded, and will sacrifice anything to further that cause.
20. What do you want your character’s legacy to be?
To bring back a peaceful Federation, and have a family again. He is the sole survivor of his name now, and doesn’t want to lose that.
Medical Profile
Completed by Captain Mareena, SF Medical, Starfleet Starship Command Course Medical Officer:
Throughout his career, Tom Marsland has received numerous reprimands for being cocky, arrogant, and stepping outside of the bounds of his duties (and sometimes Starfleet Regulations) to get a job done. That being said, this has tempered over the years. Tom has nearly 20 years of dedicated service to Starfleet, and while he has not ranked up as fast as some in his course, he hasn’t done terribly, either. While cocky, he has the raw talent as a Navigation officer to back it up. He has solid leadership skills that stem from the running of a Navigation and Operations Department.
Of most concern to me is Tom’s internalization of his emotions regarding the death of his sister. She was on Sigma Rho when Tom assisted in the evacuation. She died in his runabout while he was piloting. He has a lot of internal grief surrounding these events, and was hesitant to discuss them with me. As a future Commanding Officer, Tom will need someone to talk to. It seems the only people he has ever opened up to in his life has been his romantic interests. A previous spouse, Janet Naegle, and a previous love interest, Rynia Solaa – he needs to either be in a relationship again or have a very strong Executive Officer or ship Counselor who would be willing to press him to discuss his personal issues with them.
A future Executive Officer will do well to keep an eye on Tom on liberty – as self-stated, he does like to drink, and spends an inordinate amount of time at local establishments testing their brews and attempting to meet women – nothing serious, he says, just some fun.
This aside, I do believe Tom will make a strong Commanding Officer – drawing off more experience than most have, I believe he will fit in well in the current state of the Federation, where we need strong pilots who can think on their feet in Command, given the propensity for battles right now.
Physically, Tom has had no more or less injuries than most. He received some head trauma during the evacuation of Sigma Rho, a broken arm while playing racquetball in the Holodeck with the safeties disabled, and numerous other small injuries and burns sustained in the course of his duties and his time spent in holodecks with the safeties off, of which he has received two reprimands for.
Command Questionnaire (Completed at Starship Command Course (In Character))
1. Who’s your best subordinate?
My best subordinate is every subordinate. The success of a command individual is dependent upon the team under them. A leader is only as good as his followers – a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. It is up to each member of the crew to develop and back up their subordinates as much as they possibly can.
2. Who’s your most troublesome subordinate?
My most troublesome subordinate would be one who never brings anything to the table. The one who never brings advice and the one who blindly follows orders. The ideal of Starfleet of diversity is the one I treasure the most. Again, everyone brings -something- to the table, and in the current state of Starfleet, that is needed now more than ever.
3. What do you feel is the most important aspect of your job?
The most important aspect of my job is to train my reliefs. In the disarray of the Federation right now, the job of any senior officer in Starfleet has to be to train their team to be the best, and to train those that clearly have solid leadership potential to be the future of Starfleet Command.
4. Which Starfleet/Federation ideal are you most likely to sacrifice yourself or your ship to defend?
The Federation has always valued the ideals of universal liberty, equality, peace, and cooperation. To that end, protecting those that cannot protect themselves is the ideal that I would most likely sacrifice myself to defend. As far as sacrificing my ship, if called upon to do so, I would, but I would rather find a way to continue the fight another day, as then my crew can continue to serve the greater good.
5. Which Starfleet/Federation ideal are you most likely to disregard in defense of your ship and crew?
The ideals? Few to none would I disregard. See my answer for above. If I could survive to fight another day, then I might pursue that course of action. As far as individual Starfleet regulations, history alone has shown Starfleet Captains that have disregarded numerous regulations in defense of those ideals. I would like to think I would fall into those groupings of individuals.
