Welcome, everyone, to Star Trek: Above & Beyond!
Some of you have already posted and viewed elsewhere, but I though I'd make a post to kind of centralize everything for you.
First of all, thank you all again for making this leap with us. This has become an exciting opportunity, and I'm looking forward to continuing our adventures together. I'm confident that we can make STAB the best iteration of this game yet, both because of our awesome players, and what is already a markedly improved staff dynamic.
If you haven't already, please view the threads located in the Community Input section and let us know what you think. The sooner we can get the 'Critical' topics figured out, the sooner we can begin play.
When Aoibhe and I first started talking about what we wanted to do with this new game, Aoibhe suggested the brilliant notion of including the players in as many decisions as we could. While I don't want to dwell too much on the last game, she felt a lack of transparency and too much unilateral power were the things that eventually ruined things, and I'm in full agreement. So the Community Input thread is one of the ways we're looking to democratize game decisions, and also a way for us to be more transparent with you all. More methods of achieving this goal are on the way, but I felt that it would be best to stagger them a bit so that we can get the basics done first - forming our ships, establishing the starting lore, and beginning play in fairly short order.
On the subject of Aoibhe, she regrets that she will not be able to join us right away. Life for her has gotten ridiculously busy over the last month, but she is hopeful that things will settle down by the end of March, and that she'll be able to join us then. That's why I've taken lead on communicating with you all and setting up the forums. Just to be clear, she will definitely be joining us as soon as she can.
In the meantime, Andrew James has been kind enough to offer his help, and Aoibhe and I both agree that he would make an excellent addition to the staff. For those of you who don't know him, Andrew is another one of the 'old hands,' and was in fact one of the founders of STE. He has a brilliant mind for the game, and he will be running one of the ships on a permanent basis, as well as helping us administer the game. So thank you again, Andrew - I'm glad to have you with us, and I think you, me, and Aoibhe will make a great team.
Finally, you can see the first pieces of our foundational lore in the State of the Federation section. As you'll see, we're taking the opportunity to go a little crazy. For those of you carrying over characters from STE, we're moving ahead 3 years to 2399. This gives you plenty of room to change as much or as little as you'd like, and it gives us a year of awkward Prince references to work with! It's a win-win!
Like the rest of the game, it's not our intention to make the lore too unilateral in creation. One of the systems we'll be implementing in the near future is to allow players to join a 'committee' to help make decisions about a number of topics, including Lore. The Lore committee will be help decide how the rest of the powers in the galaxy are looking in 2397, and will help us flesh out the universe we're playing in. The Lore committee will also look at the events of a ship's Arc and discuss how those missions might affect things going forward, though it should be explicitly stated that the committee will not be determining arcs ahead of time. As always, a ship's director is given the freedom to decide those. The aim of the foundational lore is to give those directors plenty to work with.
It is for the aforementioned sake of facilitating play quickly that I've gone ahead and established the current state of the Federation. Once I've got all that set up (I still need to make a map and have a couple more pieces to post), Lore will become a shared endeavor. I can't tell you exactly when the Committees will come into effect, but I will certainly keep you all updated.
Once again, welcome to your new home for Star Trek RP goodness. We are immensely happy to have you
