“Chin... Hayliolagh... Dos... Jiang... Ishihara…” “Divorced, Beheaded, Died...” the younger woman recited, her stylus swinging in a lazy arc in front of her PADD, “...Divorced, Beheaded, Survived?” “Not quite,” Admiral Sheedy sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose for the nth time. Her coffee was long cold, the nip of real whiskey within it the only thing that was preventing her from tossing it back into the replicator, “...but not far from it.” She leaned back in her chair, heaving her tired legs with visible effort onto the edge of her pristine desk, smudging her assistant's earlier polishing work, folded her arms and closed her eyes. It had been a long day.
“The Zorya does seem to eat Captains like candy.”
“Last one’s still alive,” the woman with the stylus reminded her superior. Sheedy opened her eyes and looked across at the other woman. “Barely. Look, just read out the list of possible candidates. The Zorya’s absence at that commemoration would be noted and that’s more of a headache than I care to endure. We have to get them there. Let’s lock this up and call it a night.”
“One sec,” the assistant said, biding her time as she ran her stylus over her PADD, the tap-tapping noise picking out a regular beat. “Ok, here it is.” “Let’s hear it.”
“Foyle, Duncan.” She directed his personnel file over onto the transparent viewscreen that overlooked San Francisco Bay. The young Commander Foyle’s image appeared, partially blocking out the cloudy night sky and the hint of a moon beyond. His cold, blue eyes immediately gave the impression of a man who had seen more than his years would suggest.
The assistant read aloud “Uh… he’s young, currently Ex Ohing on the, uh… nowhere, now that I look… cause his ship blew up. OK… that’s not ideal.” “Seleyan Sun,” Admiral Sheedy said, pulled her feet off her desk and sitting forward. Reaching with a groan, she picked up her cup and examined its contents, dismayed to see a slight, cold film covering the remnants of her coffee. She ran some simple calculations in her mind, gauging the volume of whiskey within. On a mad impulse, she knocked it back. It tasted about as bad as she was expecting. The whiskey had not been worth it. “He didn’t blow it up, at least…?” Lt Rilo offered with a shrug. “And he comes highly recommended. There’s a nice list of Captains vouching for him, which is, you know, comforting.” Sheedy threw the screen a skeptical look. “...’comforting’...” The Admiral held her breath, then let it out. “Who else is on there?” Rilo blinked. “That’s it. Just Foyle. Foyle is... the entire list. Seems the Zorya’s history has put off anyone else. So, I guess that makes this guy either brave or foolish.” Admiral Sheedy spun her chair, “A good Captain needs a little of both if they’re gonna make any headway.” She snapped to her feet.
She knocked on the table three times like a judge who’d misplaced her gavel. “Easiest decision we’ve made all day. Inform him in the morning. Get him onto his new boat as soon as possible. I don’t want that crew going any more feral.” “Yes ma’am.”

MISSION ORDERS: TO: Captain Duncan Foyle, USS Zorya CC: Lt. Commander Joanne Feyna, USS Zorya
Captain, Congratulations on your new command. I have heard very good things about you and anticipate this trend to continue in your new position.
The Zorya, as you are undoubtedly aware, has been taken in for a refit and has had extensive work down on its damaged systems. You are therefore only required to ensure you and your crew make it to the anniversary commemoration of the battle of Free Haven by stardate 11808.13
Ensure your Engineering team faithfully accounts for any teething problems you may encounter.
Fair winds, Commander. I can honestly say, you were easily the most suitable candidate we considered for this captaincy.
Signed, Admiral Mirabel Sheedy, Starfleet Command..

Mission Brief Stardate 11808.13
TO: Senior Staff, USS Zorya NCC-86273 FROM: Commander Duncan Foyle, C.O. USS Zorya NCC-86273
We are on our way to the commemoration of the battle of Free Haven. I am aware that most of you have less than fond memories of this event, having lost a great deal of friends and a fine ship while nonetheless successfully protecting the colony and it's inhabitants from Breen incursion. The event we are attending exists to reflect upon both the lives that were lost, and those that were saved during that day.
We will arrive shortly, yet well in advance of the actual event agenda.
XO: Commander Feyna, please crosscheck with the department heads for crew and systems status and readiness.
NAV: When we exit warp, put us into geostationary orbit above the colony.
OPS: Contact the colony as soon as we are in range, tell them we've arrived.
CTO and CSO: Mister Douglas, Mister Stark, please compile complete status reports for your divisions proper. And keep half an eye on the area we're warping into, as well.
CMO: Doctor, once you have a moment to spare, please notify me directly.
ENG: I hope you can tell me starbase repair did a great job and that there's not much to do but finetuning, mister Gutey.
That will be all for now. Captain Foyle

Mission Brief Stardate 11808.20
TO: Senior Staff, USS Zorya NCC-86273 FROM: Commander Duncan Foyle, C.O. USS Zorya NCC-86273
It was to be expected that this area would still bear scars from the battle, but this minefield of radiation, distortions and leftover debris is just baffling. A heads up from Fleet Command would have been a useful appendix to the invite for the commemoration event, I feel, especially with the volume of vessels expected to attent. Luckily there is a science flottila in place to intercept arrivees, led by USS Goodall's Doctor Green. The unexpected adjustments he insisted on are extensive, but we can't take the risk of being zapped with tissue damaging doses of radiation. As an aside, Goodall's Doctor Llyng had provided us with an opportunity to do some real science while we await the ceremony's agenda. A welcome diversion in these trying times, I feel. They've been seeking to figure out a local cyclical anomaly, apparently seperate from threedimensional space, if not time. Let's see how we can help.
XO: Commander Feyna, please collect reports on the status of the adjustments that had to be implemented.
NAV: Keep station and monitor our surroundings. Minor orbital adjustments to stay clear of debris or radiation hotspots are at your discretion.
OPS: Contact Free Haven and request the shedule and requirements for the commemoration. We need to know how much time we have to prepare, and what exactly we must prepare for.
CSO: There's an uncategorised anomaly off our starboard bow, figuratively speaking. I'm sure you are excited to have a closer look. Co-ordinate with Doctor Llyin once our radiation shielding is on point.
CTO: Mister Douglas, as soon as your shields are adjusted according to Doctor Green specifications, have a look at the LRS and monitor the area for incoming vessels.
CMO: Doctor, as a double check, see if you can detect any infitrations of anomalous radiation in sickbay. If our new shielding specs work, there shouldn't be anything to detect.
ENG: I know these adjustments are quite unexpected, Mister Gutey, and a lot of work. I have no doubt you can handle them efficiently.
That will be all for now. Captain Foyle

Mission Brief Stardate 11808.27
TO: Senior Staff, USS Zorya NCC-86273 FROM: Commander Duncan Foyle, C.O. USS Zorya NCC-86273
Right, people. I want as much information as possible on that message and this portal, door... anomaly, as we can gather. Then I want your suggestions on how to proceed, seen from your proper fields of expertise, before proceeding with any path at all. Information first, actions after.
XO: We need to keep everyone focused on the data at hand, with as unbiased a view as possible. You know them and their triggers best, so I'm relying on you here, commander.
NAV: Hold position at a safe distance while keeping an optimal link to the probe. Safe trumps link, by the way.
OPS: Analyse the authenticity and origin of that signal to the best of your abilities, every bit of it, from vocal matching down to it's quantum signature.
CTO: Get me a probability score on whether that anomaly could have been caused by concentrated weapons fire on the Hyperion. Also, keep half an eye on the greater area, minimize unexpected visits.
CSO: We need as much information from that probe as it can give us, mister Stark, and then some. Approach the anomaly as close as possible but do not have it enter yet. Also, see if you can find out how stable this thing is and how long it's been active.
CMO: I'd like a survivability prognosis of the environment around this anomaly, and from beyond if possible.
ENG: Mister Gutey, we need a risk analysis on ship safety versus anomaly proximity. Relay your recommendations to the helm.

Mission Brief Stardate 11809.03
TO: Senior Staff, USS Zorya NCC-86273 FROM: Commander Duncan Foyle, C.O. USS Zorya NCC-86273
It looks like our scientific sidestep has upgraded to a rescue mission, crew. Believed lost in the battle we're here to commemorate, mister Lyon and mister Knight appear to be rather well, if not eager to rejoin the living on our side of the Universe. They're not here yet, though. Their... gate, is at the centre of this proverbial minefield, so we've a lot of work to do. Especially with the added time pressure of the window set to close in less than two hours. I am certain the chance of bringing home two well known Hyperion crewmembers warrants our utmost concentration and effort. Let's find a way.
XO: Keep in communication with Lyon and Knight at all times. Get as much useful information from them as possible to facilitate their retrieval.
OPS: Keep that communications link stable, mister Cordan.
CSO: Find a way, mister Stark. I don't particularily care how, as long as everyone gets out in one piece.
CTO: Work with Science department towards a swift and safe solution. Any workable idea is a go.
CMO: Prepare to recieve two people for a thorough health check, Doctor. As soon as we have them, they're yours.
CEO: Just about every department will have specific energy needs in the next couple of hours, mister Gutey. Reallocate whatever you can, within safe parameters.
NAV: Keep us as steady as possible, Ensign. Prepare an escape route to use once we retrieve our fellow officers.

Apparently, lower mass objects seem to have fewer negative effects when closing in on the anomaly, so we're going with the shuttle plan as the safest way for our extraction attempt, given the limited time frame.
XO: Coordinate the away mission and keep in contact with both the shuttle and the stranded.
CSO/ENG/NAV: The plan is yours, you know best how to proceed. Keep talking throughout, so we can follow up on your progress. Good luck.
OPS: You now have two important communication channels to keep open, Mister Cordan.
CTO/SCI: Keep working on the data and telemetry you're collecting. Be vocal about any findings or concerns.
CMO: Stand by to recieve our guests, Doctor. Also screen the away team once they're back, in order to prevent contamination from that radiation out there.
CEO: Keep that simulation running loops and add new shuttle telemetry as it approaches the anomaly. I'm particularily interested in the return path.

Mission Brief Stardate 11809.24
TO: Senior Staff, USS Zorya NCC-86273 FROM: Commander Duncan Foyle, C.O. USS Zorya NCC-86273
All: We've retrieved our away team, plus two. Great work everyone. The radiation in the area around the anomaly has apparently wreaked havod on our cells, with varying degrees of severity. With Beta shift in operation, we have some time to get the Alpha crew checked over by our medical staff and, hopefully, back in shape.
CMO: I'm sorry about the overtime, Doctor. I hope Mister Douglas is all right. Please notify me about his status at your discretion. AUX: Mister Lyon, I would like to welcome you aboard the Zorya. Please contact me once you're cleared by our medical staff.
