Hey all,
As you've seen, we've got a number of serial logs going in this section for characters that aren't otherwise part of the active ship crews. These are characters from previous iterations of the game, with long, storied histories that might not be immediately apparent. As not all of our players are familiar with these characters, I thought I'd summarize who's who to give you all some context.
It's highly likely that the material in these logs will come into play in future arcs for the ships, so, if you've got the time, it would be good to read up on them and get a feel for the events playing out elsewhere in the Federation.
I'm writing this all from memory, but my memory is not great. As such, I'm hopeful that Aoibhe and Einar will be able to flesh out their characters a bit more reliably than I can.
Henry Sumner
Played by: Me
Henry was the first Sumner kid in Starfleet, and he wore a lot of hats in his shorter-than-it-felt career - Science Officer, Tactical Officer, and Intelligence Operative. Accordingly, he also served on a number of ships over the years, the most noteworthy being the USS Seleya (where he first faced court martial due to a batshit insane XO), the USS Kraken, the USS Hooke, and the USS Bremen (where he faced court martial for a second time due to insubordination).
Henry first met Kesh Suder during a stint in Starfleet Intelligence, prior to his assignment to the Seleya. Their first meeting was less-than-cordial, and, when they met again aboard the Kraken years later, they had a difficult working relationship. Over time, however, their enmity cooled, and the two eventually became friends due to Henry's maturation and a healthy dose of shared suffering.
Kesh was presumed killed while she captained the USS Belligerent, with Henry and members of the Bremen crew aboard. The loss of someone who'd become one of his closest friends proved too much for Henry, and he resigned his commission.
Kesh Suder
Played by: Aoibhe
Aoibhe has been playing Kesh Suder since the 90s, as I recall, so I couldn't hope to approach a proper summary of her exploits. In regards to her appearances in this section, this is the important info:
Kesh was an on-again, off-again SFI operative during her career, as well as serving a number of ships as either XO or CO. A number of the eventual crew of the USS Bremen served under her aboard the USS Hooke. The crew of that ship was eventually merged with the Bremen, though Kesh did not join them. They would encounter her again, albeit briefly, before her supposed death aboard the Belligerent.
I say 'supposed,' of course, because she didn't technically die. The Bremen, under command of Sara Sumner, would eventually discover that Kesh's brain was being kept alive in a null-entropy box by Cix Jordain, a former SFI agent, during the Twissel incident. The Bremen crew managed to established communication with Kesh's mind, where she expressed her wish to continue living. From there, a small team of Kesh's acquaintances (Henry Sumner, Tony Adalberto, and some other dude we don't need to mention) set about performing the impossible - restoring Kesh Suder to life.
It may or may not shock you to learn that they were successful! Henry wasn't much of an expert when it came to raising the dead, but his role was to rehabilitate Kesh's mind and body. In the process, the two of them got the chance to explore some unexpressed feelings for each other. Determined not to let Kesh be a science experiment for the rest of her life, and with a small bombshell about to go off regarding Section 31, Henry decided to help Kesh escape, and ran away with her to Orion, where they've tried to keep a low profile and live a happy life together.
Tony Adalberto
Played by: Einar
Tony Adalberto was a magnificent Engineer aboard the USS Bremen, and a number of ships before her. In the finest Starfleet traditions, he routinely pulled miracles out of his ass to save the day, and threw raucous parties in the interim (when he wasn't getting into pissing matches with a certain other officer who shall remain nameless for now).
Then Tony fell in love with Niamh Danann. Then Tony got Nia pregnant. Then Tony was rescued from an interstellar menagerie by his time-traveling daughter, and, shortly afterward, Niamh lost the child in an incident with an Orion anarchist.
Tony didn't take it well, as you might imagine, and he eventually went AWOL and tried to disappear, serving as an Engineer aboard a number of old civilian freighters. He was eventually tracked down by Henry Sumner, who enlisted his help in exposing Section 31's involvement in the disappearance of Twissel, and their ties to the Admiralty. During this time, the two of them were also recruited to help resurrect Kesh Suder, creating a really weird few-month-long stretch for everybody involved.
Tony programmed the virus that eventually spread the leaked Twissel report, which was compiled by Raqiin sh'Hruvek at the instruction of Sara Sumner. Ultimately, this would result in Tony getting the blame for leaking classified information. He was then captured and imprisoned, though Captain Sumner was able to pull enough strings to get him released after a year or so.
Niamh Danann
Played by: Aoibhe
Niamh Danann was a station brat growing up, and has spent nearly all her life out in space. In fact, she hates being planetside due to an irrational fear of the sky, thinking that she'll go careening off at any moment. It's kind of an adorable neurosis, really.
In keeping with her upbringing, Nia was a natural pilot, eventually serving as the Hyperion's NAV officer under Captain Jonathan Rome. She would go on to be his on-again, off-again XO, their relationship strained by Rome's acerbic nature and Nia's occasional temper. Her becoming addicted to a Vendorian's paralytic toxin didn't help at all.
Nia met Tony Adalberto during a joint operation between the Bremen and Hyperion, and the two would go on to have a somewhat strained long-distance relationship, eventually resulting in Nia becoming pregnant with Tony's child. Things were going alright until the Hyperion crossed paths with a deranged Orion woman named Adria.
Captain Rome was the primary focus of Adria's obsession, but she wasn't above using his crew to get to him. She kidnapped Nia, using her as bait to lure Rome into what she'd hoped would be a final confrontation. In the chaos of battle, Nia was caught in an explosion. She survived, but endured severe damage to the abdomen, rendering the pregnancy nonviable.
Understandably, both Nia and Tony were devastated. Tony went AWOL and disappeared for a while. Nia did what she could to cope, but struggled. After the death of Captain Rome in the skies above Free Haven, Nia resigned her commission.
Jonathan Rome
Played by: Einar
Man, I don't even know where to start with Rome. He was the legendary captain of the Hyperion, and the Scimitar before her. He was Sara's mentor and friend. He was an inspiring captain who could also be a bit of a dick at times.
Rome had more than his fair share of run-ins with Section 31, particularly with a psychopathic agent named Dixon. His struggles against Dixon and the organization planted a firm loathing for it in those who served under him, providing much of the impetus for the push to unveil them.
He wasn't initially meant to be the Hyperion's Captain, only attending her maiden voyage in an advisory role. An incident result in the unfortunate death of her actual CO, and Rome was forced to assume the role. He was stuck with it from then on, the ships' leader throughout her relatively short, but momentous life.
During the Second Tzenkethi War, Captain Rome was named as the leader of Taskforce Arrani (name for his old friend, Eva Arrani, who has been killed in the Tzenkethi's initial attack on Sigma Rho). He held the flank against the Tzenkethi's Breen allies, succeeding despite being outnumbered and with an outdated reserve fleet. Holding the line at Kobliad, Rome was eventually given additional ships and sent on the offensive, chasing the Breen and Tzenkethi from the Badlands, and then tasked with invading the Tzenkethi world of Lamemda in order to draw Tzenkethi forces away from the front lines.
The gambit was grueling, but successful, and Rome and the Hyperion proved instrumental in the ultimate victory over the Tzenkethi. The war, however, took a personal toll on Rome.
It is, perhaps, fitting that Rome met his end in battle, once more against the Breen, and once more in the skies over the Free Haven colony, sacrificing himself in order to save his crew.
Seriously, these summaries are woefully incomplete, but I hope they give you a sense of who these characters are, and their importance to the origins of STAB. Hopefully Einar and Aoibhe will be able to add more to give a better picture.
