There's been some discussion about the general in-game date, so I though I'd make a thread for it. Right now, my general idea is that we'll be playing in 2399. I chose that date for a couple reasons:
1. It plays into the idea of change. It's that waning days of the 24th century, and the Federation finds itself at a cross-roads. It is fractured, and the galaxy around it is falling into chaos. What will the crews do? What can they do?
2. Room for change. I felt 3 years was a solid chunk of time for players to make changes to their characters, and the account for the starting lore. I also wanted to give the sense that the state of the Federation would be something like 'the new normal' instead of something that just happened.
Gunther, however, brought up a good point about there being a consistent delay between real-world time and in-universe Star Trek time, which would make the game's starting time somewhere around August of 2395. Going with this date would require a bit of retconning for STE information, but that shouldn't be a huge problem, and going with 2395 might make it feel a bit more official for some folks.
Since the general goal is for me to not just decide things unilaterally, I figured I would ask you all what you thought. Are there any strong objections to going with 2399? Would 2395 feel more 'right'?

I'm fine with either date to be honest.

Three years is alot of time to make up. My head is currently trying to wrap itself around what has happened during that timeframe in my character's life, but I can't just start writing logs about it without knowing what has happened in the history of the Galaxy, all of it being interconnected. (and btw, August 2395 is a good six months before we left off, which according to a conversation that I had with CJ a few weeks ago, was something closer to late February of 2396) If we started closer to where we left off then it would feel more like 'home' to me and therefore easier to imagine. But having said that, I'm flexible, and moving things forward would also provide alot of opportunity for log writing...

How about a compromise? We can set the date to September of 2397, so that'll cut the lapse to a year and a half, and we'll kind of quietly let time run slow until the 'canon' time catches up. That might be a couple years yet, but it gives us a decent benchmark to keep in mind.
That would still give some room for us to set up the civil war stuff, and it would eventually bring us in line with 'canon' time. Any objections?

So I got to thinking about it, with me changing the Year on the Tempest to be 2396, technically the date IC right now is December 7, 2396 which has us less than a month from 2397 so it would work out for us very well to be honest if we decided on 2397. LOL
Having to loose 2-3 years of RP time and not having the chance to play out some of the character developments that would come up, especially with the state of the crew right now would be more taxing I think than this minor change. This was also expressed by one of my crew who was concerned about all the missed development that would come.

Basically, if we were starting with all new characters a time jump would be no big deal. But when we are playing the same characters, making that time jump means we have to play our characters how we would envision they might have changed in the time we are skipping over without the how or why they got there. It can be done, but I don't think it's ideal.

The Tempest is indeed in a critical stretch. I'll discuss some options with you guys this Saturday.
