Just a snippet of information would, she thought, satiate her curiosity. “* Adalberto, crash landed shuttle, rescue mission, derelict moon, died of atmospheric exposure”Or “Married Academy sweetheart, retired, owner and manager of "Tony's Bologna" Italian restaurant on Risa”...hahahahahahahahaha

...
“We crossed into Federation space just south of the Rishaalian cluster,” the Andorian offered with a pain-filled groan. “Didn’t account for a crew of ‘fleet cadets on a training exercise.” He leant towards his injured side, grimaced, pressed a control in his seat and projected a snap shot of the battle into the centre of the circle for all to survey. “You think we look bad, you should see what we did to those brats.” He looked at Loran with a victorious smile as the major points of the simulation cycled through from start to finish.
Red Squad, surely… Niamh thought, recognising the class of training shuttle immediately. She fought hard to keep the concern off her face and her mouth closed as she watched in horror as Oseth’s three, experienced raider crews ran rings around the cadets. She sensed, rather than noticed Loran looking in her direction, but kept her eyes firmly focussed on the simulation. The Andorian continued, “We had to retreat. My raiders could only hold out so long. No casualties on our side... yet… “ he waved away an off-screen doctor, “...on theirs, unknown, but we disabled seven of their vessels and detected an antimatter explosion as we exited long-distance scanning range.” Niamh closed her eyes and breathed deeply. She heard Winston beside her tut to himself.
“And your mission?” “We’ll find some other way to get that biomimetic gel. I’ll keep you posted.” Loran looked around. “Ears to the ground, everyone. You hear any skuttlebut, you relay the details.” The captains nodded. “Now, get seen to, Oseth.” The Andorian looked to be about to argue. Then, his face progressively paler, he decided better of it. He thumped a control on his armrest and his holoimage fizzled out. His battle projection faded in the seconds after his exit.
Through the projection, Danann confirmed that Loran’s attention had swung to her. “Next?” Niamh bit her lip. “The med shipment at El was delayed, and now the gem has been stolen. We’re back to square one.” She kept her voice all business, though it was clearly a strain after the horror she’d just witnessed. “...We’re considering making another trip into Romulan territory, or trying to find a way to convince Doctor Yasheen to cross into the neutral zone… maybe make his set up on Zeta… but… we’re open to other suggestions. Zeta Nine, last we heard, had a stockpile of dertarium to last through the next season with rationing, but the weather’s changing and things will start to get desperate soon enough.”
“Who stole the gem, and for what purpose?” Tanal enquired. “Doesn’t matter. Fact is, it’s gone.” Danann replied sharply. Leeson deserved to be punished, but he didn’t deserve the wrath of the entire Captain’s Council on his back. He had only stolen that gem to fulfil a desire she had fallen prey to, too.
“Who… stole it…?” Loran added her pressure. “I’ve dealt with the thief,” Danann deflected, “The Federation outpost closest to us, Science Station Aceso, is rumoured to have a good supply, maybe we can negotiate with them.” “You’ve no time for negotiating. Steal it,” Loran replied, her expression deadpan. “I’m not…” “You wanna save those people? Prove yourself? Two birds, one stone, Red. Steal it.” “I’ll find a better way, a safer way. I’m not risking my crew!” “You were going to return to Romulan space, Danann. And you know what they do to trespassers. A few years in a Federation prison would seem like a holiday in comparison.” Loran countered. “And besides…” Ezia added, “you slip in and out of that border so easily… this will, as you humans say... be a piece of cake.” Niamh ground her teeth as her cheeks flushed crimson. “I won’t do this. You saw what happened to Oseth and his crews,” she said, “and I’m just one, completely defenseless freighter!” “Exactly, they’ll... never... suspect you.” Niamh’s stomach dropped. This felt like a set-up. They were setting her up. Loran stared fiercely. “This isn’t summer camp, Red… We’ve limited resources, and you’re all those people have. You fail, they die. That’s the way it is.” Ezia sat back in her seat and crossed her legs theatrically. “Time to get your hands dirty, Princess.” Danann’s fists clenched. Loran watched her silently. “You have 24 hours to decide.”
--- “Hey, watch where you throw that!” Winston yelled as Niamh’s headset went sailing through the air. “Shit!” she bellowed “Shit, shit… shit!” Winston took his own set off, folded it neatly and handed them to Danann. “You wanna break this one too?” Niamh wiped unshed tears of fury from her eyes. “No…” she admitted, petulantly. She stretched, shivered and pulled herself out of her seat. “Dammit…”
“We’re crossing the border, I gather…” She didn’t deny it as she exited the cockpit. “I’ll get supplies from the station...” he offered, still nervous about her stepping any closer to Lil than absolutely necessary. “Once we’re undocked,” she called back, “...call the crew to the mess hall. We need a plan.” “Want me to include Leeson…?” “Fuck it, why not? We’ll all go down together…” “That’s the spirit, Cap!” Niamh rolled her eyes. “Yah… Look, I’m going to get some rest.” She shivered, and left the cockpit with a heavy heart. Winston remained behind, puffing out a lungful of misted breath into the silent air. “Yea, this is gonna go great.”

Bang Bang Bang After a while the rhythm of the racket became hypnotic. Bang Bang Bang Almost soothing, Danann thought, as she lay still and blank eyed in her hammock. Bang Bang Bang It was almost helpful in her pursuit for calm. She needed to think this day through. She knew for sure that the entire situation, Loran’s insistence on a Maquis incursion into Federation space, was risky on several levels. But she would also be lying if she didn’t admit to intense feelings of trepidation at the prospect of both successfully tricking, or being apprehended by, people who she had served alongside of during the war. Bang Bang Bang The idea of being caught and tried in a Federation court was genuinely terrifying to her. What would her Mom say? What would Roj’ and Ethan think? What would Rome think, if he had been alive still? Every failure, she realised, felt like she was letting him down somehow, and the guilt was palpable.
Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang Bang BaBang Bang BaBang Leeson chose to mix it up a bit, knocking her out of her reverie.
The young pilot had been at it since he’d heard her return to her berth.
At first he had indulged in a bout of self righteous, verbal abuse; his words tumbling so fast from his lips that most of them, bar the absolutely worst insults he could conjure up, were unintelligible. He was no orator, but his point was clear; he hated the Federation, she had joined Starfleet, therefore, he hated her.
Bang Bang Bang But his raised voice had proved unsustainable. So, now he was expressing his displeasure by thumping one metallic object against another in the confines of his own berth, the sounds of his fury reverberating around the small living quarter section.
Niamh pulled her blanket up around her shoulders and closed her eyes tightly. What she wouldn't give for a brig right now, or a speck of discipline on this tub... or a security officer of some sort. Sometimes, she even missed Douglas, the big lug.
She sighed, turned to the console attached to an jointed arm on the wall beside her, and pulled it into position a foot above her head. She raised a slender hand and after a moment’s hesitation, accessed the message she’d been avoiding…
^Nia, Long time, huh? Well, not that long, I suppose. Just feels like it.^
Danann’s green eyes widened as she realised who had contacted her. “Oh my god…” she breathed, grabbing the screen and pulling herself hastily into a sitting position. Instantly Leeson’s racket, the cold air, and her own hunger and paranoia faded away as she fell out of her hammock and landed in an undignified lump on the floor below. [/i]

Bang Bang Bang Bang... Bang!
Winston closed in on the source of the noise, his heavy feet thumping along the Granuaile’s narrow corridors. Damn that station-bred idiot, he huffed as he pulled his fur-trimmed jacket close around his thick neck and lumbered closer to the door.
Bang Bang Bang B-
He unlocked Leeson’s sealed door, surveyed the extensive damage within, with Leeson - a sweaty, panting, red eyed mess - at its heart. Winston leaned on the doorframe. “How's it going, buddy?” “Fuck off, Carrick.” Winston ignored the younger man's reception and smiled. “Hey, Leeson, wanna do something fun…?”

Niamh pulled her legs under her, flexed her wrists to check for sprains and shook off the shock of her fall. “Computer, play message…” she ordered. ^They finally gave me a new ship: the Chiron, another Intrepid. We're shipping out later today. I should be busy going over crew evals, and ship history, and getting caught up on the latest fleet movements, but since it was my last night at home, tradition dictated a new tattoo. That's my excuse, anyway. Try as I might, I couldn't get my mind on paperwork.^
Danann smiled from her spot on the floor of her berth. Sara sounded well. She was glad of that. ^I think about you a lot. Not all the time, but enough to let me know it's not just a fond memory, you know? I think about that night, and how perfect it was.^She closed her eyes, memories of the night they spent together flooding over her like some fast-acting drug. This had been shortly after Tony’s ignominious disappearance, before the Hyperion had been destroyed… before she’d left Starfleet. ^I know that the original idea was to remind you that you were desirable. Looking back, though, I see how much I needed that night, too.^
Picking herself up, she let the message continue to play. With memories of Sara’s lips fresh in her mind, she straightened her jacket, and opened the small cabinet attached to a recessed bulkhead. She reached in and grasped hold if the neck of a bottle. ^I love Thalev. I married him, and I will spend the rest of my life with him, but nobody really gets you on every level, you know?^
“Damn right…” she muttered, agreeing with Sara. ^There are levels that he can't reach for me, and there are levels that I can't reach for him. You reached those levels. We connected, and the connection remains, at least on this end.^
She paused, bottle in hand, considering Sumner’s honest appraisal. The corners of her lips curled a little, and a softness that had been absent from her expression for some time returned. ^Maybe that's not the case on yours, and that would be ok. Still, I needed to tell you how I feel. Thalev knows.^
Niamh’s eyebrows raised. ^Believe it or not, he doesn't mind. He explained about Andorian bonding groups, and the implication was that he would be ok if you and I happened to have mutual feelings.^She grasped the bottle, and slowly eased out its cork, impressed with Idrani’s attitude. “Cool guy…” she decided, having spent the entire time since her encounter with Sara wondering if he knew, if he cared, what he’d do if he found out... ^I know you've moved on from Starfleet, and I don't blame you. Still, if we happen to be in the same area sometime, maybe you can look me up. Regardless, I will continue to care for you. Deeply. Very deeply. You will always have an important place in my heart.^Danann raised the bottle to her lips and let the aroma of the liquor within tickle her nose. It was still good. She replaced the cork. ^And now, you'll have an important place elsewhere, too. I hope you're doing ok. Do you still have the bass? I would love to hear back from you if you feel up to it. I'll understand if not, though.^Niamh’s eyes flicked to the side, where the neck of the never-touched bass guitar poked out from between two packing boxes. ^Either way, part of me will always be yours. Take care of yourself, Nia. - Sara^
“ FILE ATTACHED” the computer alerted her. Niamh glanced up in surprise at the console suspended on its arm above her head. Throwing the bottle into her hammock, she grabbed the screen and focussed all her attention on the picture. It was a holoimage of Sara's latest tattoo - a bite mark that had been permanently inscribed in ink. Above it, in rough, scratchy graffiti, was the message 'NIA WAS HERE' A laugh escaped her lips, rumbling up from deep within, a tinkling, joyous noise that was as pure and cheery as it was unexpected. Suddenly the stress of the last few months melted away in a sea of unbidden mirth. The machinations of the Captains Council were moot, her hold on her crew was of little consequence. She laughed til her stomach ached, calmed herself down, fanned her eyes dry, then looked at the image again and lost herself in laughter once more. It was glorious. Sara had immortalized her, included her, she’d accepted her - flaws and all - and had given her the one thing she’d never really had; a speck of permanence in a galaxy of unpredictability. Tears of relief and elation streaked her freckled cheeks. “Nice ass, Sara…” she smiled, saluting the screen with an appreciative hand. Moments later, she’d pulled the contents of her packing boxes apart in the search for one, essential item, had grabbed the bottle she’d strewn on the hammock and left her room. As she paced with confidence down the pokey corridor, she felt like a new woman, ready to take on the Federation if need be. “Nice ass, indeed…”
