TO: Captain Jiang Zhihao, Commanding Officer USS Zorya NCC-86273 FROM: Fleet Admiral Martin Walker, Starfleet Command CentCom
SUBJECT: Mission Orders SD 11703.27
Captain Jiang,
Congratulations on your new assignment, Captain. I assume you've read up on the Zorya's history, but if you'll allow a bit of self-indulgence, I'd like to recount it here for posterity's sake.
The Zorya has been in service since the final months of the Dominion War, and has seen significant action in every major conflict since. She has served with distinction and valor not only in these times of war, but in times of peace as well. In the finest traditions of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets, the Zorya has defended the defenseless, brought aid to the desperate, and succor to the ill.
She's had her fair share of scars along the way - Admiral Leahy informs me that it's likely the Zorya doesn't have an original part left in her, but she still has plenty left to give.
I've gone over your record, and I am confident that the Zorya is in excellent hands. To make sure of it, as you likely also know, you're inheriting one of Starfleet's finest bridge crews. The stories of the Hyperion are many, and I have no doubt her exploits will someday be legend, as will her Captain, Jonathan Rome.
You have lost a ship before, so I know you're familiar with the effect it can have on a crew. It will take some time for your senior staff to adjust to their new reality, but I wouldn't be giving you this post if I didn't think you were up to the task.
Now, onto your first mission.
We are at war. There is no denying that, and the Zorya will be seeing its share of the fighting. It is important, however, to remember what it is we're fighting for. This is not a conflict over resources, or territory. This is a conflict of the soul, and I believe it is vital that we never, ever forget what the Federation is supposed to be.
To that end, I'm sending the Zorya to escort the USS Salk to Tandar Prime, where an outbreak of Levodian flu is threatening to become a plague. You will rendezvous with the Salk at Calanara and make your way from there. The Salk will be handling the bulk of the medical side of things, but I'm sure Doctor Rousseau's input would be welcome. The Zorya will be loaded with whatever supplies the Salk can't carry, and provide security just in case.
Take this time to get to know your crew, Captain, and to let them get to know you. The trial by fire will come later.
Good luck and godspeed,
Admiral Walker

The stars shone brightly over the fields of Western Querella much like they had when Ithik was a boy. The constellation of Eshal hung low on the horizon, marking the first days of autumn, which seemed fitting. Everything about that moment seemed just right. The harvest was coming soon, and the scent of devat filled the still-warm evening air. Soon, his family would enjoy a feast. Soon, his people would know enlightenment.
Soon, Ithik would be dead.
When Drona had first spoken to him about the Flowering, Ithik had been afraid. He didn't want to die. He wanted to watch his children grow up, to see them start families of their own, and to grow old with Shai. The more Drona revealed, however, the more Ithik had begun to accept the necessity of it. His death would hurt his children. It would hurt Shai.
But his children's children would reap the benefit. They would know a new world, a new existence beyond what most Tandaran's could imagine. The pain his family would endure seemed a small thing in the face of that knowledge, and the acceptance of that perspective was what had truly begun Ithik's journey.
It wouldn't be long, now. The illness had progressed to his heart and liver. Drona said it took less than a week after that.
Ithik tried to take a deep breath of the sickly-sweet devat air, only to cough and sputter, a deep, devastating hacking that echoed into the night. He thought he might pass out and miss the signal, but finally he managed to gasp and wheeze, his whole body tingling as his heart pounded in his chest. Slowly, he laid on his side in the grass, curled into a ball. For all the peace he'd made with his decision, it didn't stop the pain of the Seeding.
---
Ithik had nearly fallen asleep by the time the signal came over his communicator. He'd carefully fished his transponder from his pocket and switched it on and waited, and now he was sitting in a luxurious shuttle, speeding its way to the capital.
The air was warm and humidified, which eased the burning in his lungs. A kindly older woman had served him a tea of tava and bisk sap, which eased the pain in his throat and stomach. Soft, peaceful tones issued from unseen speakers. Drona had truly considered everything.
The shuttle dropped them off in one of the outlying residential neighborhoods, in front of an unassuming tenement building. The woman held Ithik's hand as he closed his eyes and centered himself for what was to come. Finally, he nodded that he was ready, and they stepped inside.
Drona was there to greet him personally, a gesture that elicited a misty smile from Ithik.
"You honor me, Gatherer," Ithik rasped.
"The honor is mine, Seedling," said Drona, who gently framed Ithik's face and kissed his forehead. The two embraced for a long moment before Drona stepped back, looking to Ithik with a warm smile. "Are you ready?"
"Yes," said Ithik. There was no hesitation in his voice, nor in his heart.
It was time to die.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11703.27 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Welcome aboard everyone. I'm aware that most of you already know each other, and I am looking forward to getting to know you all myself.
Straight to business. We've been ordered to escort the USS Salk to Tandar Prime who will be making efforts to stop an outbreak of Levodian flu.
XO: You have the bridge. Once ready, take us to the rendevouz co-ordinates, warp 5.
CMO: Doctor Rousseau, please make sure you're up to date on the Levodian flu, the latest treatments, etc. While the USS Salk is tasked to assist medically, I am sure you'll want to assist.
CSO: Please make sure your department is ready for departure. If necessary, coordinate with Dr. Rousseau for any research or equipment she may need.
CTO: Lieutenant Douglas, please stay on alert for any True Federation ships along our route with the Salk. We are to protect her above ourselves should anything occur. Additionally, please ensure that no one infected with the Levodian flu boards this ship under any conditions without my direct approval, nor any crew members expose themselves to it.
ENG: I want a full report on the status of the Zorya. Give everything a once-over please.
OPS: Please ensure all the supplies are on board before we get underway. Contact the Salk, let them know when we've begun heading their way.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11704.03 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Now that we've made it to Calanara, the real work begins. Being this close to the border, we'll need to stay on our toes.
XO: Please join me on the bridge.
CMO: Liaise with the Salk, see if their medical team would appreciate your assistance, but be careful not to step on any toes. Make sure our Sickbay is ready for anything, including an outbreak of the Levodian flu. I've had experience that tells me not to take any risks when it comes to this sort of thing.
CSO/CTO: Coordinate together to make sure our sensors operate at greater than usual capacity. If there's any True Federation activity, I'd like to know about it as soon as possible.
ENG: I want a full report on the status of the Zorya. Give everything a once-over please.
OPS: Monitor communications in the area, and stay in touch with the Salk.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11704.10 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: My orders haven't changed since our last briefing, please stick to your current tasks. Namely, offer whatever assistance the Salk needs to take on the Levodian flu, and keep an eye open for anything that could cause us trouble. With the news of the Gorn attack coming through, we need to remain at Condition Yellow.
SCI: If the probe we dropped off at Calanara sends us any concerning readings, I want to to know.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11704.17 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Now the real work begins. Let's stay alert.
XO: I've had a change of heart about the scans. I'd like you to find out why the supplies are needed in the middle of nowhere. Contact the surface. Run scans. Never mind if it upsets some bureaucrats, I think it is only fair we know where our supplies are going, and why.
CTO/CMO: You already have your orders. I remind you to report in regularly, and do not compromise any precautions regarding the virus.
ENG: Continue working with the Salk on the computer interface for sample analysis.
OPS/CSO: The XO will head up an investigation into the location you've been scanning passively until now. Please take your orders from her. Lieutenant Stark, also keep a transporter lock on the Away Team.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11705.08 From: First Officer Lt Cmdr Joanne Feyna To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: The Captain is currently otherwise engaged in his Ready Room, with secure communications.
CSO: As the secondary away team, we are about to transport to the surface of the research institute. Any samples you take must be quarantined. If possible, try to do your scans and assessments in situ, to avoid potential contamination. The information generated so far from the Primary away team implies that our bio suits are no barrier, but continue to follow protocol.
CMO: Doctor Rousseau, I would like a status report from your team as soon as possible, given to myself over comm. I want as much information about your interaction as possible, in the event the second away team are impacted.
CTO: Continue to support the Doctor in her requirements as part of the Away Team.
ENG: Until the Captain completes his communications, you have the bridge. Please ensure communications are not interrupted between teams and the bridge.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11705.22 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Thank you for proceeding with your assignments. I have been reviewing the classified information provided to us from the Tandarians relating to their research projects, and their possible link to the outbreak. Please continue taking your orders from the XO until I complete the research.
XO: Please give me a full update on the current situation.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11705.29 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Our priority is to remove the lifeforms from the surface of the planet and relocate them on the nearby moon. The XO and CMO will be heading the attempt. Whatever they need, give it to them. I'm going to try and keep Etodran calm for long enough to pull this off before he eliminates the lifeforms in a panic.
XO/CMO: This is probably not going to be easy. Take every precaution. Once we get them to the moon, we can discuss what to do next. It isn't a perfect solution, but it's the best option we have right now.
CTO: Make sure those organisms stay secure when they are aboard. Evacuate all non-essential personnel from the area.
CSO: Please lend your expertise to the XO and the Doctor.
OPS: Inform Starfleet of our situation. Also, prepare a beacon for launch into orbit of the moon to transmit the standard quarantine message.
ENG: Keep this ship running smoothly - now, of all times, we don't want any failures.

USS Zorya NCC 86273
Mission Briefing Stardate 11706.12
From: Commander Joanne Feyna
To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: We all need to focus on our primary aim: To relocate the entity to it's new home.
CMO: Once you have stabilised the Captain and made him comfortable, I want you back on the bridge to monitor the creature and potentially other crew being affected.
CTO: I want those ideas on how we can assist the terrorist actions on the planet
CSO: Continue working on a way to increase the telepathic shielding throughout the ship. We do not want another incident like we just experienced with the Captain.
OPS: Please keep me informed on any updates with the actions happening on the planet. Also, if you are able to monitor any communications that the creature attempts to transmit
ENG: With all the power being used for the creature, please try and keep us holding together!

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11706.19 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
All: Things aren't going to be as simple as we'd have liked.
XO: There's a few things going on at once. I'm going to need you to coordinate the crew's efforts.
CMO: Please ensure our backup plan to communicate with the organism is ready. Brief whichever crew member you choose for the task,
CTO/OPS: The organism is dormant, for now, but I want to transfer it to the moon should it cause any more issues. Please be ready. Mr. Stark, I'd also like some alternative places we might be able to leave the organism should this moon not prove viable.
CSO: A busy day for you, I'm afraid. I want to know what happened in this system, to the best of our ability. What sort of large object could cause this destruction? How long ago did it happen? I also want a projected path of the moon: is it safe from further asteroid strikes?
ENG: Keep those force fields in place please.

USS Zorya NCC 86273 Mission Briefing Stardate 11707.03 From: Captain Jiang Zhihao To: Senior Officers, USS Zorya
XO: Please keep the Tandarian government updated with our progress, and monitor the away team.
Away Team (CTO/OPS/CMO): Your task is to locate Dr. Lona. I don't want you taking on the entire terrorist faction by yourself - if you locate the Doctor, make a report and we'll contact Tandarian authorities to see how to go about bringing him into custody.
CSO/ENG: Work together to find a way through that interference. I want to beam the away team up should they run into any trouble.
Let's get to it.
