11711.13 On Bajor (Izzy and Soule)
Isabelle put the last word on the last report of the day, and hit ‘send’. Then she tapped her badge.
“Soule, We’re finally done with all of the crew evaluations on the station.. Where do you want to meet to go down to Bajor? I’m still at the infirmary, but I’m off in a few minutes..” She smiled, anticipating a relaxing evening on the planet.. Considering the almost nonstop month they’d just had, the shore leave was very welcome.
Soule tapped his badge quickly in response. "Hey Honey. That's great." He smiled, sounding out of breath, as if he was panting. "I'll just get finished up here." His voice was followed by a number of screams, shouts, loud thudding and clanking sounds.
A few of DS9’s infirmary staff gave her odd looks, hearing the cacophony coming from her badge. Her regular staff who were helping out with the evaluations, just shrugged, and went about their work.
She just chuckled. “So… let me guess. Combat training today?”
"Yeah.... Just showing some of our new cadets the ropes." He replied in a cheeky tone, as he casually held a squirming officer to the ground. "Say Hi to the Doctor Everyone!"
"Hi Doctor!" They all groaned back; one or two muffled.
"I'm an Ensign, sir." The officer beneath him croaked.
"Then you show know better by now..." Soule laughed, before patting the ensign on the back, and standing up. "I can meet you on the promenade if you want, it'll give me a second to clean up. Do you want me to grab you any off duty clothes whilst I run passed our quarters?"
“Hi Everyone..” She called out cheerfully to the cadets and ensign, at the same time signing out of the infirmary and heading out the door onto the main Promenade level.
“That sounds good, chéri. I’ll meet you in front of the shops near the infirmary. Hm.. how about the turquoise dress that I picked out on our honeymoon. With the silver shoes?” she smiled. “I’ll see you in a little while.”
"Alright." He smiled. "I'll see you there love." He closed the comm, grabbed a towel and rushed off out the door; poking his head back in before leaving. "Oh, remember to tidy up guys, don’t kill each other, and practice blocking and hold breaking. I've gotta date with my wife!"
"Did he... did he just give us homework? After beating the crap outta us...?" The cadets grumbled.
"Welcome to Zorya." The ensign replied, rolling over onto his back, and getting comfortable.
It didn’t take long for Soule to get to their quarters; where he promptly turfed his gym gear into the hamper in the corner, and jumped straight into the sonic shower.
Isabelle made her way over to the shops, perusing the kiosks on the Promenade’s lower level. Several people milled around, and she cast an eye over the crowd but did not see Soule yet.
Through a nearby window, she could see the wormhole flashed open outside, a celestial lightshow that was ignored as ordinary by almost all of the regulars on the Promenade. She, however, never ceased to be awed by it, and given their recent adventure with the Prophets, she would never think of it as ordinary. She wondered how things would have turned out differently if the wormhole aliens had not intervened in the Dominion’s attempt to destroy it. For that, she was grateful to them. She took a seat near a window and watched, waiting for Soule to arrive.
Soule eventually made his way to the promenade, all freshened up, wearing a red and black striped shirt and some charcoal trousers. Izzy's turquoise dress was neatly folded around his arm, and her shoes dangling from his finger by the straps. Seeing Izzy staring out the window and not spotting him, he double backed for a second, stopping at a flower stall and buying a single purple and yellow crocus; just as he did on their first date. He then snuck up behind Izzy, brandishing the flower in front of her as he kissed her cheek. "Bonjour, chérie."
His kiss snapped her out of her contemplations, and her attention was quickly shifted from the window to the flower, and her husband. She turned towards him with a smile of greeting. “Bonsoir, Imzadi.”
She took the crocus in her hand and breathed it in. “It’s beautiful, thank you.” Then she stood and embraced him, giving him a kiss in greeting. “You look handsome tonight. And thank you for bringing my dress, I’d forgotten about something to wear tonight when I left for work.”
"You're welcome." He beamed with delight. "I figured when you finish work, you don't usually go down to a planet after... and you're usually on the ship to start with. Saves you going all the way back home, after a long day."
He held his hand out for her, looking over to one of the docking rings. "After you, my love."
A scant half an hour later, The lights of Bajor’s capital city, Ashalla, twinkled in the early evening light as the shuttle made its final landing approach to the green planet below. Soon after that, their shuttle came to a stop on the landing pad and Isabelle unclipped her seatbelt and got to her feet while Soule did the same. She had found a place to quickly change whilst they were waiting for the shuttle, and was now dressed in the flowing turquoise dress and shoes that Soule had brought along.
“So, where are we going for dinner?” she asked, clasping his hand.
Soule twirled her around once like a ballerina, her dress fluttering in the breeze, as he gave a blissful sigh; before remembering that they were married, simply smiling at her for a moment. "There a spot... called the Kai's... or the Vedek's... overlook. I heard the moonlight shines magically over the waterfalls." He turned and pointed. "I think we can see the restaurant from here..."
Her gaze followed his finger to the falls and just above, where a building could be seen with a large lamplit patio. “About half a mile, I think. Over that bridge..” she observed.
She linked her arm around his waist and they found themselves on the path and then a wide bridge over the gorge where the waterfalls thundered into the river below. With three moons visible out of the five, there was plenty of moonlight, and the waterfalls seemed to take on a light of their own. She slowed her steps as they got to the bridge, and stopped in the middle, leaning her head on his shoulder to gaze into the falls below.
“It’s really beautiful here. I’m surprised I never made it down here before, when we were at DS9 a few years ago. I didn’t know what I was missing.”
"We were so busy back then." He rested his head on her's in return. "Stopping down terrorists, defending the quadrant against super weapons, taking down secret black ops organisations... trying to avoid the command staff at each other's throats."
"And I didn’t exactly make doing romantic things together easy; always pissing Jon or Niamh off, and ending up degaussing the transporters." He chuckled, staring out as the glimmering water droplets in the air took the form of distant stars in the night sky.
“I think you were degaussing the transporters on the day we had our first date.” Izzy gave a chuckle also. “There was alot of drama on the Hyperion back then. And I think those two accounted for most of it.. I do miss them sometimes though.” She let out a wistful sigh, remembering their old captain who had gone down with his ship; and Danann, who had disappeared shortly after. “I wonder what happened to Niamh.. We haven’t heard anything about her in a long time.”
“We’ve had plenty of adventures on the Zorya also, and it’s been only a month. I think it’s become home as much as the Hyperion was...” she smiled, looking up beyond the moons where she knew their ship was docked at DS9.
"I put some feelers out, at Daystrom; she became a Cargo Captain as far as I'm aware. I could never reach her, so I just assumed she was avoiding contact us." He too sighed wistfully, then shrugged. "She may have seen it was me, and just pushed the ignore button. She did that sometimes, when I talked to her face to face on Hyperion."
Isabelle shrugged. “Maybe she just needed the time away.. Who knows? But I do hope that she’s doing alright.”
They continued their slow walk across the bridge, arm in arm, admiring the view. As the concept of home came up, Soule smiled. "I'm happy to call anywhere home, if you're there. But... Zorya does feel more homely than Hyperion did. Maybe I'm not trying as hard to make it my home like I was back then?"
“The Zorya also felt like home from the beginning because so many of our old crew came on board with us. It’s been really good to have familiar faces around.”
They passed over the bridge and up a gentle slope that wound up the hill where the restaurant was located. As they climbed, Ashalla became stretched out before them, with the whole valley becoming visible.
"It helps that Captain Jiang doesn't have a green lady pushing him to madness." He wiggled his head. "And I like talking to Jo more. Even though she was my CTO, we very rarely spoke to each other... I dunno how we ran the department. But XO suits her."
Pictures of Ashalla simply didn't do it justice, they always made the city look sombre and dark. But from up here, it was breathtaking; like Shangri-la, the city hidden the mists. "Oh wow..."
“Yeah, the lack of nemesis is a big improvement." She laughed. "And Jiang is a much more calm and balanced Captain, which helps the crew’s morale, I think. Jo’s a good XO also; and I don’t know what it is, but she does seem happier these days.." Isabelle turned to look as they rounded the last corner, echoing Soule's sentiment.
”..wow."
Ashalla was illuminated in the early evening darkness, making the city look anything but sombre. Twinkling lamps lined the Grand Avenue of Lights, the pride of Bajor’s capital. The tallest building in the city, the Great Assembly, towered over the Avenue with its domes and columns, and the Shikina Monastery rose from the opposite side of the valley from where they stood, set on a green hill. The Kai’s Overlook restaurant was just a few steps away from where they stood, and it was well placed to take advantage of the view.Twinkling lamps lined the Grand Avenue of Lights, the pride of Bajor’s capital. They were shortly seen to by a greeter, who showed them to their table; Soule pulling out Izzy's seat for her, before taking his own. He smiled at her across the table, looking back towards the spectacular view. "We should have come here earlier..." He thought aloud.
“I’m glad we decided to now. It’s really nice to get a rare moment of beauty and peace amidst the normal chaos..” She smiled back at him, taking his hand across the table.“We’ll be on leave for a few days. We could spend a few more days down here,” she suggested. “Maybe tour the city, or get out into the countryside..”
"Now that, sounds like a plan, my love." He sighed happily. "I'll call up, tell Evans to man the fort for a few days..." The thought of responsibility crossed his mind for a moment, until she squeezed his hand and he thought better of it. "But not right now..." He placed his commbadge on the table, then to one side.
"What looks good...?" He asked.
“Let’s see..It all looks delicious.” She peered at the specials for the evening. “I think it’s between the Asnor fish and Larish pie.. With an accompaniment of Decapus salad, and savory..” she squinted at the menu again, sounding out the Bajoran names.. “Drolish bread. And I don’t think we can go wrong with a carafe of Springwine..”
Soule just looked on at her, smiling, losing his train of thought as she spoke. Besides, he wasn't exactly an expert in Bajoran food, deciding to join Izzy with whatever she chose. "Sounds good to me, love."
