I am an avid board gamer. I mean, obsession is a good word to describe it. Today we were in our favorite game shop in Austin, TX and I saw a game I knew nothing about. Looked interesting so I went to discuss it with the staff. They are awesome by the way, best of any game shop I've ever been in. So I'm trying to discuss this game with them that is titledAbove and Below. And I can't stop myself from saying Above and Beyond every single time. You have warped me folks.
so anyone else love board games? Got a favorite? A wish list?

My favorite board game is D&D 4th Edition (ba-dum ts!).
I haven't gotten to play as many board games as I'd like, mostly because I don't have many local friends, but I've played and enjoyed Smallworld, Nexus Ops, Catan, Puerto Rico, and Agricola (I do have one friend who's big into board games, but haven't seen him in a while). I hear good things about Pandemic, but I haven't had the chance to play it.

We have Puerto Rico but haven't played it yet. We want to get Agricola down the road. We've got Pandemic and Pandemic Contagion and Pandemic Legacy. Legacy is fantastic!
This Above and Below game is like a mash up of dice rolling, resource management and role play. I'm kind of excited to see it in action. We host semi regular game nights.

Oh and Smallworld is a favorite of mine. You should try Ticket to Ride. Catan gets regular play in our group too.

I love the XCOM Board Game. Incredibly difficult, but in the spirit of the videogame.

I've been trying to get my friends to sit down with Risk Legacy for ages to no avail. But we do a lot of card-based games like CAH or Munchkin along with our tabletops.

I know nothing about xcom what kind of game play is it? It's a co-op strategy game in which (up to) 4 players take a role as part of the XCOM organization (one manages the finances, one commands the marines in away missions, one works on the laboratory for the research, etc.) to defeat the alien invasion of Earth. It is half real time (through the use of an app for either phones/tablets and computers), and half turn-based. As I said, it is EXTREMELY difficult, even on the easiest settings, but it feels incredibly rewarding when you complete it and play with friends. In theory you could also play it alone but I would not recommend it. If you can find it, buy it! You won't be disappointed. They even released an expansion which, unfortunately, I still don't have, so I can't judge on it yet.

That sounds extremely interesting! Going to have to add that to our wish list I think.
We recently heard of Terraforming Mars. This game is sky rocketing up BGG's top one hundred list, I think it's now in the top ten or fifteen. Anyone played it? I'm very curious about it...

I do enjoy board games, the main problem is finding enough people to play with, however. (Maybe there's some online versions or something we could all play together at some time?). Chess is my favourite, but of course not the typical kind of board game people think of when you say 'board game'. I think we had a chat in the OOC once about strategy games - I'm looking forward to trying some more out like Hnefatafl or Xiangqi.
Also I have recently got a game called Twilight Struggle which looks great, but I need to learn how to play it!
Nice thread!

Oh my word, Twilight Struggle. My husband got Twilight Struggle, I have yet to play it. He played it once with my sister though and they nearly killed each other. But they both raved about it. I think it was BGG's #1 game for a long time. It was only recently unseated by one of the new legacy games, is have to look to see which one. You got yourself a good game. Only takes two players, but it's got a high complexity rating and it's long. You'll need a good half day available to play at least. I haven't taken the time yet.

So I've been so busy writing for both the Chiron here and also for a Firefly themed board sim I run that I have terribly neglected a couple online mafia games I'm playing. I'm suddenly having to defend myself for being too quiet, lol. See what you guys have done to me, having so much fun simming and writing here?!

Not only do we strive for your affection, but we will fight for it, too! Have those Mafia nerds name the time and place, and we'll throw down! THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!

Careful what you wish for. They fight dirty, murdering people in their beds, lynch mobs... it can get ugly.
