Alright, for this item we'd like your input on the ships we'll be starting the game with. The Tempest is joining us as a group, so they're pretty set. For the rest of you, we feel we have enough players to start with 2 additional ships. The question is whether we want to move on from the Hyperion and Bremen names, and if so, what shall we name the new ones?
My preference would be to move to new ships and new names, if only to make this feel more completely like a new start. I know we all have fond memories of the Hyperion and Bremen, but unfortunately not every member of their crews will be joining us, and I think it would be more appropriate to start new tales of adventure and intrigue.
But I want to know what you think, both about moving on and your name suggestions!

I think the ship names from STE belong to STE and we should avoid using them. It might be fine and never be an issue, but why risk it or worry about it, or invite grief in the future? I think new names are best, but that also means picking what classes we want I have no particular names off the top of my head (I'll brainstorm) but I like the idea of following naming traditions, so all ships of a particular class are named after a specific thing, like moons, or explorers, or .. you get what I mean.

That's a good point, Andrew. Unless there's overwhelming demand to continue using those ships, I think we'll assume that we'll be using new ships. You are also right that ship classes will need to be decided, so I'd like some input from everyone on that as well. Feel free to suggest canon ship classes or 'EU' classes, as we'll hopefully be expanding our ship database (and potentially even create some all-new designs at some point).

I agree that going with "New" ships is the way to go.
Are we picking up in 2393 still? I assume that we would be.

Actually, we were in 2396 when we left STE. We will begin play in the year 2399.

Interesting. Well that makes things interesting. LOL I could have sworn I was told 2393 so that is when we jumped the ship too. I suppose we can go back and edit things to be 2396. Eh, we'll figure it out.

When STE first started, the year was 2393, but we sorta progressed the year under the hood. Keeping time has not been one of our strong suits. But yeah, I think if we just retcon 2393 to 2396 for the Tempest, it'll be fine. I'll be putting together some info for the Tempest/Station to explain what happened in the intervening 3 year lapse.

I think we should be picking names based on what class ships we want. What classes do people like?

I'll throw out an Akira-class ship named Falcata and a Guardian-class (STO) ship named Yojimbo. I like the idea of having one ship that's more geared for combat and one that's more focused on either exploration or 'multi-mission' capability.

Akira class vessels. My favorite honestly. The first ship I was Captain of was an Akira Class. USS Dark Angel. I miss my old ship.

I always thought it might be kind of cool to play an Olympic class medical ship. Could be a storytellers nightmare, but its an interesting idea.

::entering educational bla bla mode:: Ever since TNG started in 1987, the difference between "real time" and the Star Trek in-series dates has been pretty consistent at +378 years (and a half, as new year in TNG era stardates was sort of around august/september). This is even true for the "new" films, as the prime universe Supernova in that film happened in 2387 (source: Star Trek: Countdown, which is canon until disproved in films or series). 2387 minus 378 equals 2009, the year that film was released in. This also sets the current "official" time around August 2395. ::class dismissed:: So, I'm not a huge fan of departing from this silent convention. Yet, seeing and feeling the need for a significant series of in-game developments pertaining our new setting, it could be a plotwise necessity. - Shipwise, I'm also a huge Akira class fan. Former CO of one, too! I also found playing on an Intrepid quite enjoyable, as it has that "small family" feel, with a design aimed at independent exploration. I'm not really much into STO, but I do feel SOME ship classes can be carried over from there, respecting the year in which they've been launched, as STO takes place some years onwards. Call me too traditional if you like, bit I'm a fan of sticking to "canon"

I'm gonna create a separate thread for the timeline discussion so we can keep this thread focused on the ships.
So far we've got three fans of Akira-class ships, and one mention each of Intrepid, Olympic, and Guardian.

Isn't it? It's a great blend of some classic designs with an appropriately advanced finish. There's definitely some Excelsior in the secondary hull, and plenty of Galaxy in the saucer and nacelle pylons.
